Active Travel is not just for locals part 2: Netherlands cycle tourism was worth 2.4 billion euros a year, Scottish cycle tourism is worth just £345million, yet we have nearly twice the land area (77910km v 41850km) and half the population. With the National Cycle Network growing year on year connecting magnificent scenery and ancient towns, cities and villages ... and the ice cream shop by the sea, creating connected communities and neighbourhoods, a huge green tourism opportunity and national economic boost is just waiting to be woken up. #greentourism, #cycling, #connectedcommunities, #sustainableliving, #sustainabletourism, #liveablecities
The Netherlands’ rural cycling network could be the eighth wonder of the world: thousands of miles of smooth, signed, scenic, separated paths connecting every remote corner of the country. The result? A cycle tourism industry worth €2.4 billion annually to the national economy.

🚲 Walt Judas CEO Message: "Watching a lone cyclist saddled with heavy gear struggling to make his way up a long steep hill on Highway 5 (Yellowhead) a couple of weeks ago, I wondered where he planned to sleep that night considering he was well over 100 kilometres away from any hotel/motel, campground or other amenity one might need after such a gruelling climb. My guess is he pitched a tent somewhere in the woods once his legs finally gave out. As the cyclist quickly faded to oblivion in my rear-view mirror, it struck me that as a province we still have a ways to go to develop the kind of infrastructure needed to attract tourists from all over the world who love bike touring. To be sure, there are wonderful riding trails and routes in the Thompson Okanagan and elsewhere in BC, just not enough of them or at the advanced stage to effectively market and lure the lucrative, long-distance cycling tour segment. Conversely, one element of cycling that has taken off in virtually every region is mountain biking. The sector is booming with countless mature and new backcountry trails, bike parks, retail and service shops, as well as clubs and communities whose primary tourism offering caters to riders of all ages and abilities. British Columbia is not only home to some of the best back (and front) country trails in North America, we also have many world-renowned bike parks that attract high-yield visitors from every part of the globe. Our reputation on the international mountain biking stage is growing every year."... Read more here: https://bit.ly/4eelBz7 #BCTourism #Tourism #BC #CEO

Modal shift is not just for locals- With over 4 million tourists coming to Edinburgh each year and a net zero by 2030 commitment, isn't it time to encourage tourists onto our blossoming active travel network to reduce reliance on coaches and buses to see the sights? Could we get more investment into the greater cycling network by working with the tourism industry? This is a nice article about the benefits of bicycle tourism in Copenhagen. E-bikes make cycling accessible to all in Edinburgh. #cycling, #tourism, #edinburgh, #greenliving, #sustainablecities, #activetravel https://lnkd.in/eNtvGDR8

Communicating sustainability (without greenwashing) | Carbon Literacy for Marketing Professionals | Re-Action Co-founder | born at 339ppm
This is Sam Haddad doing what she does best and telling it like it is. A gondola like the one proposed up to the glacier above La Grave is part of the growing trend towards 'last chance tourism'. It will see people flocking to see the glacier before it's gone. This is not only happening in La Grave, it is repeated in Chamonix with visitors to the Mer de Glace, in New Zealand at the Franz Joseph and Fox glaciers and elsewhere. It means more development and more infrastructure to eek every last euro out of the mountain environment before the snow and ice is a distant memory and it will no longer hold any interest for people. The local community and regular visitors to La Grave are right to be worried. It's not just old school charm that will be lost. The 'sport' of doom tourism is the preserve of the wealthy who will unwittingly, and quite simply, price the locals out of their home village. I've witnessed this here in the 3 Valleys ski area where locals now live almost exclusively in the villages and valleys below the ski resorts because they cannot afford to live in the resorts they work in. This last chance tourism contributes to two feedback loops: 👉 The first is that the fewer inhabitants in a resort, the smaller the community is who can come together to oppose the mounting number of developments that will continue to push the prices sky high. And so it will continue until ALL the beds in resort are cold*. 👉The second is that last chance tourism is creating more emissions that cause the earlier demise of the very wonders these tourists are coming to see. The more people that come, the quicker they will decline. They are adding nails to the coffin. Speaking with Gavin Fernie-Jones & Emma Crasnier about this yesterday, the situation seemed pretty bleak, but there are pockets of hope and people doing amazing things in the Alps. It's our job to find these stories, to shine a light on them and celebrate them. Sarisher Mann and Michael Shaw are doing this already with their film Green Mountain Pioneers. There are screenings coming up in the UK in the next few days. I'll post info in the comments. *cold beds refers to beds in accommodation that are only used for 3 weeks per year and are never rented out - a staggering 40% across the French Alps.
Piste off! Skiers fear new lift will threaten La Grave’s old school charm
