As Members of the European Parliament are settling in groups and committee, and as Commissioners designate will get briefed, civil society is gearing up for another tough EU mandate. The continuous progression of far-right policies will make difficult any effort to achieve justice, consolidate democracy and civic space. Standing with Venezuela: A Call for Digital Freedom and Human Rights- Stop Digital Repression In the wake of Venezuela's recent presidential elections, we're witnessing an alarming escalation of technology-enabled political violence. Digital Action joins an open letter, signed by numerous human rights organisations, urgently calling for: 1. Unfettered access to the Internet, social media platforms and other communication channels 2. An end to digital surveillance and persecution of political dissent 3. Respect for rights enshrined in Venezuela's Constitution and international commitments The government's use of VenApp for citizen surveillance, social media monitoring, and drone patrols is creating a climate of fear and repression. #Belgium showed some positive developments to counteract #corruption, but shrinking #civicspace & concerning #censorship developments threaten public discourse. See key insights from the Liberties' Rule of Law Report 2024. In 2023, the refusal to respect judicial decisions reached a critical point, highlighted by the ECtHR's Camara v. Belgium ruling. This trend signals a worrying erosion of the rule of law. There was progress in Belgium's #anticorruption measures, however, it is marred by limitations. While new whistleblower protection laws and #transparency initiatives show promise, gaps persist, hindering effective implementation. Recent judicial decisions, like in the #Rousseau case, pose threats to #mediafreedom in Belgium. Despite some favourable rulings, challenges remain, emphasising the need for stronger protections for #journalists. Concerns over checks and balances persist in Belgium, with issues ranging from access to police files to the prerogatives of oversight bodies. Aligning with human rights institutions with the Paris Principles remains outstanding. Threats against human rights defenders coupled with proposed legislation criminalizing dissent raise alarms about civic space in Belgium and mark a severe regression. Safeguarding fundamental freedoms must be prioritised to uphold democratic values.
