Our future is deeply linked with the stability and prosperity of the Mediterranean region. We support the European Commission's New Pact for the Mediterranean presented by Commissioner Dubravka Šuica, which prioritises investment, stability and migration. In our plenary debate, we addressed how unemployment, job insecurity and safety concerns marginalise youth, excluding them from key decision-making. To address these issues, we recommend to: 🔹 include youth representatives in every youth-focused legal activity and involve young people in all stages of the policy-making process; 🔹 call on the European Commission to develop a Youth Charter, while also establish a youth-focused consultative mechanisms; 🔹 to fully implement the key International Labour Organization's Conventions on social dialogue. Each year I keenly await the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's Mapping Social Cohesion Report, as it provides valuable insights drawn from the 8000+ respondents to its longstanding survey. This year I was fortunate to attend the release of the 2024 Report. Disappointingly the media has already latched on to the negatives, making much of the 49% of respondents who think immigration is too high. Granted this is higher than in previous years. But this is somewhat unsurprising given the relentless media and political commentary demonising immigration by linking it to all sorts of evils, such as the housing crisis. I'll spare you my lecture (for now) on the errors of these arguments. Missing in the media's reaction is the flipside: 49% think immigration is about right or even too low (I suspect the missing 1% is due to rounding). Scarce mention is made of the 85% of respondents who agree that multiculturalism has been good for Australia. And little has been made of the large shares of respondents who are of the view that immigrants ... ... are good for the economy - 82% ... improve society - 82% ... make good citizens - 92% ... fill job vacancies - 72% #socialcohesionreport #migration https://lnkd.in/gWx7yKg9

This is such a significant figure that represents a powerful force for the nation's development. It would however, be equally crucial to disaggregate this data to understand the experiences of marginalized youth, including those from the LGBTIQ+ community. The issue here is even in the discourse of youth empowerment and development, youth that form part of the LGBTIQ+, are often left behind and theit issues fall through the cracks. Their voices that are often overlooked in discussions about youth development and economic participation. If we are going to talk about inclusivity, then we have to be intentional to delve deeper into the disparities faced by this community.
