As the EU Council's Working Party on the Environment meets next week to discuss downgrading wolf protection, let's remember the crucial role wolves play in our ecosystems and the urgent need to protect them. 🐺 Wolves are a keystone species, crucial to maintaining the health and balance of our natural environment. Yet they are threatened by hunting and habitat loss. 📝 Today we have a chance to make a difference. A petition is circulating to stop the hunting of wolves in the EU and ensure their protection. 🔎 Discover the wild species of our project's area that our conservation program aims to protect and better understand, in partnership with protected areas' rangers and the local community's leaders in #Mongolia's Gobi Desert. 🦅 The #CinereousVulture (Aegypius monachus) also inhabits our project area. This species is listed in the IUCN Red List as 'Near threatened'. Its population is decreasing worldwide. 💡 The main threats affecting this species are: direct mortality caused by humans (either accidentally or deliberately) and decreasing availability of food. In Mongolia, it has been recorded that shooting and poisoning of cinereous vultures are increasing (N. Batbayar in litt. 2005). Nests are also sometimes destroyed. Changes in air temperatures resulting from climate change may represent a potential future threat to this species. In our project area, we have located some nests, and we also regularly observe individuals of this species. The latest IUCN Red List update sees the Bornean elephant - the world's smallest elephant - listed as Endangered for the first time, with only around 1,000 remaining in the wild. ⚠️ It's worrying news for the subspecies, but could also be a crucial step in securing more support for conservation work like that carried out by WWF-Malaysia, to help protect them and their habitat. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and poaching all threaten the survival of Bornean elephants. WWF Malaysia are supporting collaring programmes helping scientists understand their movements, reduce conflict with humans and inform future conservation efforts. Elephants play a vital role in East African ecosystems. These magnificent creatures, a keystone species, exert a profound influence on the overall environmental health and biodiversity of Amboseli. Elephants not only function as habitat architects, creating clearings that allow sunlight to penetrate and foster diverse plant growth, but they also act as seed dispersers, traveling vast distances and scattering seeds with their nutrient-rich dung, promoting plant regeneration in new areas. Their dung serves another critical function, acting as a natural fertilizer that decomposers break down, returning valuable nutrients to the soil and promoting healthy plant growth. Elephants also create vital water sources during dry seasons by excavating water holes with their tusks, benefiting not only themselves but numerous other animals. Despite their ecological significance, elephants face significant threats from ivory poaching to human-elephant conflict, to habitat loss. To combat these threats, Big Life’s community rangers conduct anti-poaching and anti-trafficking patrols to deter illegal activity and protect elephant populations. We strategically address human-elephant conflict by deploying rapid-response ranger units and building crop-protection fences. Additionally, Big Life collaborates with local Maasai communities to promote sustainable land management practices that benefit both elephants and people. Finally, we believe fostering understanding and coexistence through community outreach programs is crucial for long-term conservation success. By working together, we can ensure elephants continue to roam free and contribute to the ecological tapestry of East Africa. 🐆 The 2024 Global Cheetah Summit in Ethiopia starts tomorrow! 🌍 Cheetahs are one of the most endangered big cats, occupying only 9% of their historical range. 🌿 Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, there are just 6,500 mature cheetahs left in the wild. ⚠️ They face threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal trade for their skins and the exotic pet trade. 👇 Even though it's illegal to internationally trade wild cheetahs under CITES Appendix I, it's still happening, as shown by seizures in the past ten years. 🏝The Caribbean ranks in the top 3 of the world’s 36 Biodiversity Hotspots, but its also facing the highest extinction rates in modern history. 🤝Fauna & Flora in partnership with Re:wild has restored 30 Caribbean islands in the past 30 years, safeguarding over a dozen species from extinction. This monumental effort not only revitalizes biodiversity but also bolsters ecosystem resilience against climate change. 🌐Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – many of which are in the Caribbean – are now at the center of multiple crises, including climate change and species loss. Fauna & Flora and Re:wild staff are at #SIDS4 in Antigua where leaders have come together to plan for the sustainable development of these nations, many of which are critical areas for biodiversity.
