interesting read from Michael Vardon, this legislation is a once in a generation opportunity to get it right and the way our flora, fauna and ecological communities are under extreme duress, it would be better if Government err on the side of caution and bring in the highest standards at the outset. start high then see what works, what needs improving and what might not be working, all the experts are saying the bill falls short. Let's hope government is listening.
We need a strong and independent Environment Information Agency for Australia. The Bill to establish the agency does not provide this and we need a stronger model with true independence. There are at least two options: 1. Establish an information agency modeled on the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) 2. Leave all the data collecting to the Australian Bureau of Statistics and give them the resources to do it The Bill has some good features including recognising the need for environment economic accounts, but is vague on the detail. Similarly, the definition of "nature positive" could mean almost anything and is certainly not "nature enough". How will we know when local communities benefit from carbon offset schemes? The authors propose an innovative framework to measure and enhance community benefits, centring around a survey instrument that evaluates holistic well-being. This perspective shifts the focus from mere compliance to meaningful community welfare in climate projects. The key takeaway? The success of carbon credit projects isn't just about obtaining free prior and informed consent (FPIC). It's about forging enduring relationships and continuously assessing the impact on communities, whose lives and futures are intertwined with these projects for generations. #CarbonCredits #CommunityEngagement #SustainableDevelopment

The guidance on so-called ecosystem services is the first of its kind, setting a standard for costs and benefits that agencies have only sometimes considered in their decision making. It aims to arm federal officials with the latest research and methodologies on how ecosystem services — or “contributions to human welfare from the environment or ecosystems” — can be enhanced or diminished by federal rules on everything from infrastructure and cars to energy and health. #ecosystemservices #environement https://lnkd.in/eXmKcxMQ

Part 3: A Community Conflicted – Our Land and Sea Conservation In the heart of Australia, farmers have worked the land for generations, providing food, jobs, and heritage to their communities. When the government steps in with new cultural heritage laws or massive wind farm proposals, what happens? Outrage. Protests. People unite to protect their livelihoods because they feel the direct impact. Every new law or wind turbine leaves a lasting mark on their lives. Now, let’s head to the coast. Communities that have relied on the sea for generations face similar disruptions—marine parks, offshore wind farms, and resource reallocations. But this time, there’s little public outcry. Why? Not because these communities don’t care—they do. But most Australians don’t see the impact. It’s happening out at sea, far from view, so resistance never builds. They are certainly not aware of the taxpayer costs! Well-funded NGOs take advantage of this silence. They spin a narrative: “Australians support marine parks" No opposition is taken as active support. Ministers and bureaucrats are using precisely the same approach to offshore wind farms. But is this really good policy? Now, imagine if foreign-funded groups tried to take over farmland. There’d be uproar. The media would dig into the money trail and question whose agenda is being served. But at sea, where the impacts are less visible, there’s little scrutiny. It’s easy to support marine parks or wind farms when they don’t affect your backyard. For coastal communities and the fishing industry, the consequences are significant. The Australian fishing industry is being squeezed out. Fishers who’ve sustainably harvested these waters for generations are seeing their livelihoods threatened. Meanwhile, these NGOs claim parks are “saving” the oceans. The biggest threats to our oceans don’t come from fishing—they come from global warming and land and river degradation. Yet, these real challenges are sidelined in favor of feel-good initiatives that are easier to sell. Instead of addressing these core problems, we’re distracted by marine parks and moving wind farms offshore while governments celebrate boosting recreational fishing based on questionable economic indicators. The real danger lies upstream and in solutions that just don’t fit neatly into PR campaigns. Silence at sea isn’t support. The lack of protests doesn’t mean these policies are right. It’s time to ask: Who’s benefiting from these initiatives? If all of QLD's marine estate is now in a Marine Reserve, why is so little of the land? People are inherently kind. Ask them if they support social and sustainability initiatives and don't mention the costs; the answer will be YES.

#Youthlandrights are fundamental to sustainable development, serving as a cornerstone for economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental stewardship. However, in many parts of the world, young people are facing significant #challenges in accessing and securing land for #agriculturalproduction, threatening their livelihoods and hindering sustainable development efforts. One of the key changes #youths are facing in accessing land is the increasing competition for limited land resources due to factors such as population growth, urbanization, and land concentration. This often results in land grabbing, land disputes, and #exclusion of young people from accessing land, depriving them of opportunities to engage in productive agriculture. To address these challenges and empower youth as the center of production, it is #essential to adopt #policiesandstrategies that prioritize youth land rights and promote their active participation in land governance processes. This includes ensuring legal recognition and protection of #youthlandrights, facilitating access to land through transparent and equitable land allocation mechanisms, and providing support for youth-led agricultural initiatives. Addressing #climatechange and promoting #agriculturalsustainability are intrinsically linked to youth land rights. Youth engagement in sustainable land management practices, such as agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and organic farming, can contribute to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and soil health improvement. By recognizing and supporting youth as key stakeholders in sustainable agriculture, we can harness their innovative ideas, energy, and enthusiasm to drive positive change towards a more sustainable and resilient food system.
