“The Netherlands is doing extremely well in the scientific field: leading the Top 20 most productive countries.” 🇳🇱 This conclusion drew Elsevier in their report on the current state of Dutch science. The key success factor is international collaboration 🌏 🤝 . A large proportion of Dutch publications are the result of international collaborations, which have a significantly higher scientific impact. Research that results from academic-corporate collaborations has even more impact on science. Dutch universities succeed in collaborating with academic top insitutions from Europe and North America. Thrilled to attend my first academic conference in Belgium 🇧🇪 Excited to share two studies on Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) that I've been working on during these years on Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration 1️⃣Exploring the role of Supreme Audit Institutions 🔍 in contemporary democracies, and how they've evolved into accountability watchdogs, alongside an analysis of public policy. 2️⃣Examining the experience of Contraloría General de la República 🇨🇱 in using social media to enhance public perception of public funds control and foster citizen reporting corruption 🗣️

On Monday, we presented our recently published report "Netherlands as a Science Country" (https://lnkd.in/e3FQX_Sw) at Nieuwspoort, The Hague. Many thanks to all attendees for a lively discussion led by my colleague Michiel Kolman 🏳️🌈 Kolman. With special thanks to the panel featuring Jouke de Vries (UNL), Elke Roelant (AmCham), and Hamilcar Knops (AWTI). The key takeaways were: - The report demonstrates that collaboration is essential for Dutch science, particularly international collaboration and collaboration between universities and the business sector. Measures that hinder the internationalization of education are therefore undesirable. - Attention was drawn to nationwide collaboration among universities and the potential of hubs surrounding universities. - The importance of social science/humanities was emphasized, as well as their interaction with technical scientific research. - The importance of recognizing and valuing scientific research was also highlighted. Compared to other countries, the appreciation for scientific research in the Netherlands lags behind. Increased recognition could have a positive effect on attracting talent. - The importance of talent and the role of education, both nationally and internationally, were discussed. There was a call for greater involvement of the business sector in secondary and higher education, as well as the importance of strong literacy and numeracy skills. - Attendees emphasized the importance of research in key technologies and the need for making strategic choices. - The new government was asked to pay more attention to the relevance of universities, providing a long term, stable science vision and maintaining an attractive business climate.

📣 Exciting News! 📣 Johannes Buyel has placed an important Science Policy Brief at the United Nations! A Sciences Policy Brief (SPB) is a wrap-up of the relevance and future importance of a scientific topic that is handed to the stakeholders and representatives of a United Nations (UN) panel. SPBs abstracts are screened by a selection committee of the UN first before a full SPB submission is requested. The SPBs are then discussed by the stakeholders and representatives (in our case of the 9th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals) to derive actions and recommendations as well as funding schemes by the UN and its member states. Accordingly, SPBs are important documents to set and shape future research agendas. https://lnkd.in/g29Tse-7 Direct PDF: https://lnkd.in/dpdsMqdu

Did you know the European Commission launched the European Research Area Platform? The European Research Area (ERA) was launched in 2000 with the aim of creating a single market for research and innovation fostering free movement of researchers, scientific knowledge and innovation, and fostering a more competitive European industry. The European Research Area platform provides space for researchers, innovators, citizens, and policymakers to connect, collaborate, and access the latest information, data and resources related to the European Research Area. Higher education and research are so much linked to each other, therefore another instrument for use at the service of students, academic staff and beyond... https://lnkd.in/dZue_nDn
