Centre for Energy and Materials at the Annual Meeting 2024 in Davos The World Economic Forum's Centre for Energy and Materials serves as the cross-industry platform that enables building new coalitions and delivering cutting-edge insights required for a sustainable, secure and equitable energy future globally and locally. Under the theme “Rebuilding Trust and Momentum for the Energy Transition”, the Centre for Energy and Materials convened 400 leaders to drive the agenda across 3 key fronts: 1. Strengthening the Economic and Business Case for the Energy Transition -We must strengthen the economic and business case for the energy transition by addressing business financial viability, accelerating investment in clean energy especially in emerging markets, and ensuring the strength of energy transition supply chains. 2. Ensuring an Equitable and Just Energy Transition - The energy transition must be just, equitable and inclusive – we must leave no one behind. The world needs more investment in solutions that create system value including economic development, job creation, reduced emissions, cleaner air, and affordable energy. 3. Transforming Energy Demand - There is no real energy transition without energy demand transformation and action is needed now. 🌍It’s #NetZeroWeek and today we release the findings from our new insight report ‘Net Zero: exploring behaviour change and change resistance’. 🌲We’ve been working with VERVE to shine a light on how people are feeling about sustainability and the energy transition. The next few years are set to be transformational, as the UK aims to reach net zero by 2050 and being on the front line of the energy transition, it’s vital we’re listening and responding to our customers needs throughout the journey. 🍃 As part of our study, we worked with eight academics, undertook consumer polling and social listening. With escalating geopolitical conflicts and extreme weather events, businesses face a volatile energy market. Edie gathered sustainability and net-zero leaders to discuss adaptation strategies for net-zero goals. A survey of 2,500 European businesses found that 80% have a low-carbon strategy, but only half have started their clean energy transition. Key barriers include fluctuating energy prices, infrastructure bottlenecks, and economic challenges. Convincing boards of the business case for clean energy remains difficult. A roundtable discussion highlighted the need for better communication, cross-departmental collaboration, and technical support to engage leadership. Strategies like sustainability-linked executive compensation and detailed transition plans can promote commitment. Additionally, improving data management and supply chain collaboration are crucial for effective decarbonisation efforts. Participants emphasized that long-term renewable energy solutions are essential for reducing costs and emissions, and boards are gradually recognizing this.
