Would this innovation have happened without a woman leading the research? And discuss... Sânziana Foia had her first smear test at 25 and found it to be an uncomfortable experience. (*Half the population cries 'understatement of the year!') Off the back of that experience Sanziana thought there must be a better way to screen for life-threatening diseases. Guess what!? She is a bioengineer, so of course she developed a non-invasive device called Papcup to achieve the same screening results without the pain, discomfort, embarrassment and invasion. Amazing! The catalyst for this work came about from lived experience and was successfully developed to a minimum viable product because.....Sanziana is a highly skilled professional working in STEM. Her solution can positively impact the lives of millions of women, reduce anxiety around screening and ensure more women GET screened in the first place, find the early signs of life-threatening disease and save more lives. How many more innovations would come about off the back of lived experience if there was more diversity in STEM sectors, and a better representation of the population for whom they research and develop? If there was ever an example of why diversity is crucial this is it. More gender diversity, ethnic diversity, neuro diversity, socio economic diversity! My work Form the Future CIC creates and supports the bridge between young people and those working in business. The myriad of sectors not just STEM. We do it all. To see more diversity in industry, we need more tendrils of engagement reaching down the younger years. Children need to see theirselves reflected in their role models to be confident those doors are open to them. They need to hear all of the examples of routes to careers, all the varied and winding possibilities, not just the standard routes. They need to hear the failures and mishaps people have had in reaching that point in life to know the journey isn't always progressive, but not to give up making progress. They need champions further along the route, further up the ladder to advocate for them. If in your sectors you still struggle with representation and diversity then there is more you can do to change that. Reach out and have a chat with me. And the business benefits reaped, some now, some next year, some may be years ahead, can be outstanding.

Since 2015, the ESMO Women for Oncology (W4O) Committee have paved the way in evaluating female representation in leadership positions. During ESMO - European Society for Medical Oncology 2024, updated gender data from the W4O studies will be presented. As we approach International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I wanted to reflect on my own journey as a woman working in the pharmaceutical industry. Throughout my career, I have been focused on learning how people across the world experience healthcare and, in turn, using this knowledge to help improve patients' lives. From my early days studying medicine in Switzerland to my current role leading the US Oncology Business Unit at Takeda Oncology, I have been fortunate to witness the power of innovation and the impact it has on patients, all the while working alongside incredible women making a difference. I feel privileged to be part of a team – led by Global Oncology President Teresa Bitetti – that is shaping the future of #oncology and striving to provide personalized care to people with #cancer. This week I attended a meeting where all the leaders presenting were women, five leaders at different levels within the organization. When we discussed this, we felt somehow surprised—it is not a common situation to be in, especially within the science fields—but also very proud. One participant told me in the evening that she was so moved she texted her mom with this news. Each of us has come a long way to see this as a reality, and I am thankful to be at a company that makes this possible. This International Women and Girls in Science Day, and every day, let us celebrate the remarkable achievements of #womeninscience and inspire the next generation of female leaders, while also acknowledging the journey we are still on to achieve true representation. Together, we can break down barriers to create a more diverse and brighter future so that everyone has an equal opportunity to make a difference in the field of science and beyond. #womeninscience #diversityandinclusion #February11
