📺 Compendium | Elizabeth Kuiper on Euronews Analysing Trump’s Return “Drill, baby, drill”, Donald Trump’s rallying cry during his inauguration sets the tone for a significant rollback on climate policies, with ripple effects for Europe. Speaking live on Euronews with Méabh Mc Mahon and Dr. Stefan Grobe, Elizabeth Kuiper, Associate Director at the EPC, drew attention to the potential impact of Trump’s second term on climate policy, public health, economic security, and democracy. Drawing from the EPC compendium: "Trump returns: The challenges ahead for the EU", Elizabeth discussed how the rollback of green commitments and potential US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement could undermine global climate efforts and send detrimental signals to other nations. The compendium explores how Europe must navigate these external challenges while addressing internal pressures from rising far-right movements and disinformation. Today, the people of France head to the polls for the second round of the country’s snap parliamentary election. Three days ago, Labour won a landslide victory in Great Britain. Read our analysis of how today's election might affect Europe's climate pathways! What will these elections mean for climate policy going forward? A lot. Great Britain is no longer part of the European Union, but as this analysis shows (https://lnkd.in/dpWFNSDf), the new government's agenda could potentially influence global climate justice and finance. The Labour Party has also vowed to stop all new oil drilling licenses, which, of course, is good for the whole world. The outcome in France, on the other hand, is likely to weaken climate policies. Not only on a national level but potentially also within the European Union. (Read more: https://lnkd.in/dndt7Ydr) Another determining factor for Europe's climate policies going forward is the Strategic Agenda, the new five-year policy plan to guide the EU's work. Three months ago, We Don't Have Time published leaked documents that revealed a strategic plan to weaken Europe´s climate agenda. Now, the leaders of the union have agreed upon the final version. With a sigh of relief, many experts and climate advocates conclude that it is better than the draft. But is it good enough? Experts disagree. Learn more in this article (https://lnkd.in/dYVsmqpG). In an op-ed titled, "What Does the EU Election Mean for European Climate Policy?", Laurence Tubiana , CEO of the European Climate Foundation and a professor at Sciences Po, Paris, writes: "It has been a difficult few weeks for those of us committed to achieving a greener, more progressive Europe. In the European Parliament election, far-right parties won some 20% of the vote and secured nearly one-fifth of all seats. In my own country, France, National Rally finished in first place, and may soon be able to form a far-right government, should it manage to repeat the performance in the upcoming snap election.” Read more on our website 🔗, and share your opinion in the comments below👇 https://shorturl.at/LuoAQ #ESGMena #oped #EU #climate #europe

Europeans head to the polls for #EUelections, the outcome of which will determine more than ever the EU’s political direction. This includes the next crucial steps for the upcoming climate and energy policy. In our briefing, we highlight that the European #GreenDeal delivered under the pressure of recent crises. Nevertheless, under increased #climate and geopolitical constraints, there are important aspects which remain under-represented or are still up for implementation, such as the social and industrial ones. So, how is the EU going to position itself? What is on the horizon for climate and energy policies? And last, but not least, is there a plan? Check our briefing for overview of the key debates and challenges ahead. Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung https://lnkd.in/d8UQyQZA

Far-right populism has been on the rise in Europe: How strong is their impact on climate efforts and where is it felt most prominently? How do societies and politicians react? 🤝 These questions keep me and Julian Wettengel busy and today we published our Clean Energy Wire | CLEW dossier, shedding light on how populist parties are shaping EU climate policy. The dossier will include interviews and analyses and we are collaborating with journalists from across Europe to better understand the national contexts. The first two pieces are out (and much more to come!): ➖ Fear of ousted populists could be enough to stall climate policy in Poland: Patryk Strzałkowski reports on the disenchantment in Poland with the new government shying away from ambitious climate action due to fear of driving voters back into the arms of the populist party PiS. ➖Europe is set to face a climate backlash caused by the divide between urban and rural views, with populists increasingly capitalising on rural resistance, said Daphne Halikiopoulou, Chair of Comparative Politics at the University of York. In an interview she further explains that "what is new or newer is that we are seeing more of these parties in government, both alone and in coalitions. This is not only because more voters have voted for them, but also because mainstream parties have opened their doors and are willing to collaborate."
