Interventional Radiology & the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Only by accident I found an excellent publication on #InterventionalRadiology published in 2023 by the IAEA. It is amazing to see the value of IR being recognized by one of the most relevant, globally active organizations. It is a stark contrast to daily practice, where most patients, many physicians and some hospital administrators not know what IR has to offer. What is fMRI? Functional MRI (fMRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to observe brain activity in real-time. By detecting changes in blood flow, it maps which regions of the brain are active during specific tasks or stimuli. How Does it Work? fMRI leverages the magnetic properties of deoxyhemoglobin (hemoglobin without oxygen) to create detailed images. When brain activity increases, more oxygen-rich blood flows to that area. fMRI detects these changes using the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) contrast mechanism. Applications: - Stroke Detection: Identifies brain regions affected by a stroke. - Epilepsy: Pinpoints seizure origins for potential surgery. - Tumor Mapping: Helps distinguish tumor types and their effect on brain function. - Brain Mapping: Used in research to study how different areas of the brain coordinate during various activities. Product feedback: Those inexperienced at reading plain films can easily be distracted by satisfaction of search bias. Here the distractions were benign bone lesions nearly meaning a missed Paediatric fibula fracture. RBfracture assists and empowers clinicians to interpret plain film imaging whilst the official report is awaited from the radiologist. This can reduce missed fracture rates and inappropriate follow-up.
