Magnetite to green iron project beckons for Lincoln Minerals Lincoln Minerals will begin a partnering process for its large-scale Green Iron Project on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, which is underpinned by a recently announced 1.2 billion tonne (Bt) magnetite resource. The company aims to identify a funding and project partner for advancing the Green Iron Project to operational status. Magnetite is a form of iron ore more suited to direct reduction iron (DRI) processes, including utilising green hydrogen, than traditionally mined hematite iron ore. GFG Alliance’s Liberty steel group is already moving to utilise magnetite to produce green iron pellets and electric arc furnaces at Whyalla also on Eyre Peninsula to produce green steel. Lincoln Resources Director Julian Babarczy said: “We believe there is substantial potential value in Lincoln’s 100 percent owned Green Iron Project, which in our view is currently not reflected in Lincoln’s share price, due to a lack of awareness by the market of the scale and attractiveness of previous study outcomes. #manufacturing #manufacturingnews #decarbonisation #greensteel https://lnkd.in/gg2XtFCw

Rio Tinto up the ante on copper. Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm confirmed that the Anglo-Australian miner was constantly the lookout for other opportunities through which its exposure to the red metal could “grow further”. “We are the world’s largest producer of iron ore, we are the Western world’s largest producer of aluminum, we are the world’s largest producer of titanium slag, and we are only the top-five [or] top-10 producer of copper,” Stausholm said. “You can see that as a negative. I see it as a positive. It’s an area where we can grow and where we are growing.” Rio Tinto was cautious about buying into a “heated market”, Stausholm said, as major mining groups in Australia and around the world raced to lock in greater supplies of the red metal. “While we are looking we are sometimes saying ‘we are not prepared to pay those prices’,” he said. As a key ingredient to build electrical wiring, copper will be needed in vastly greater quantities in the build-out of renewable generation and transmission projects, while electric cars require up to four times more copper than internal combustion engine vehicles. https://lnkd.in/eqPP8M3b #copper #electrification #investing #demand

Chief Executive Officer, Joe Kaderavek, provides a recap of the Cobalt Blue business strategy and discusses the current market environment. https://lnkd.in/gfZ_tnBM While acknowledging the current challenges of the macroeconomic backdrop in the critical minerals sector, there are numerous reasons we remain optimistic about the cobalt and broader critical minerals space. We continue to see support from Australian Government policy and funding as well as increasingly effective legislation in our target markets of the USA, Europe, South Korea and Japan. Importantly, while market dynamics have been challenging for many critical minerals, there is evidence market pricing is set to improve as a more balanced market looms. Our near-term focus remains on developing the Cobalt-Nickel Refinery in the Kwinana Industrial Area. Detailed engineering design for the Refinery has commenced and the permitting process remains on schedule for submission by mid-2024. #cobalt #nickel #batterymetals #criticalminerals #electricvehicles #lithiumionbatteries #criticalrawmaterials #GreenEnergy #CleanEnergyTransition #energytransition #miningnews #Minerals #sustainablemining #asx #nometalsnotransition #greenpremium #FutureMadeinAustralia

South Australia leads nation towards green iron as global competition grows - Simon Nicholas for Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) "There are further opportunities to expand South Australian magnetite production suitable for green iron and steel production. Magnetite Mines is developing its DR-grade Razorback Iron Ore Project, targeting the state’s green iron opportunity. In July 2024, the company signed an MoU with Zen Energy covering renewable energy offtake and potential participation in future green iron projects. In the same month, Magnetite Mines signed a heads of agreement with JFE Shoji Corporation – part of Japan’s JFE Group that includes the country’s second-biggest steelmaker, JFE Steel Corporation. The agreement forms the basis of negotiations to fund a Definitive Feasibility Study for the Razorback project and offtake rights for DR-grade magnetite concentrate." #greeniron #magnetite #ironore #greenhydrogen #greenhub #SouthAustralia Peter Malinauskas, Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP, Tim Dobson Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia, South Australian Chamber of Mines & Energy (SACOME)
