According to the recent report of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) on greenwashing, the European Security Authorities envisage coordinated approach on greenwashing risks. Therefore, ESMA will support national competent authorities regarding monitoring of greenwashing, capacity building and access to data. #ESMA has published on 4 of June their Final Report on #Greenwashing in the #FinancialSector. #ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) is responsible for safeguarding the stability of the EU's financial system by ensuring the integrity, transparency, efficiency, and orderly functioning of securities markets, as well as enhancing investor protection. ESMA Chair, Verena Ross, said: “Effective and consistent supervision of sustainability-related claims is critical to investor protection and a trustworthy environment for ESG markets. With a #RiskBasedApproach in mind, ESMA has promoted EU-level common supervisory actions across the sustainable investment value chain and will continue to foster convergent and effective supervision. I would also like to remind all market players of their responsibility to avoid making unsubstantiated sustainability claims and to communicate any sustainability-related information in a manner that is fair, clear and not misleading.”

This week we are adding a new book to our Good Reads section : The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) just put out a paper examining some of the greenwashing that is taking place in Europe. #Greenwashing has become a major concern for #policymakers around the world. Focusing on EU investment funds, ESM has several unique datasets to examine the basis for these concerns. Using a novel dataset with historical information on 36,000 funds managing EUR 16 trillion of assets, ESMA found that funds increasingly use ESG-related language in their names and that investors consistently prefer funds with #ESG words in their names. 

In the dynamic, fast-evolving #ESG regulatory landscape, September 2023 saw a series of pivotal developments globally. In Europe, the European Commission proposed a comprehensive overhaul of #SFDR categories, aiming to prevent mislabelling and to align practices with the UK Financial Conduct Authority. In the United States, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission adopted a fund labelling rule to deter #greenwashing, aimed at improving transparency for investors navigating sustainable investment options. 🇩🇪 Germany’s financial regulator, BaFin, announced it has already started to apply changes to ESG fund-name rules put forward by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). ESMA finalised its rules in May for fund providers who use sustainability-related words in fund names, such as green, environment or social, and were expected to be applied from the autumn. BaFin’s executive director for securities supervision and asset management, Dr. Thorsten Pötzsch, said they were already taking the guidelines into account when processing new applicants.
