Hubble spots a galaxy shrouded by stars Hubble Spots a Galaxy Shrouded by Stars This Hubble image shows irregular galaxy ESO 245-5 located some of 15 million light-years from Earth. This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a densely packed field of stars laid upon a background of dust, gas, and light from more distant celestial objects. There are so many stars in this image's field of view that it may be a little tricky to discern that you are, in fact, looking at a galaxy. Known as ESO 245-5, this galaxy may be harder to recognize because of its apparent lack of structure, which contrasts sharply with Hubble's spectacular images of spiral galaxies that hold seemingly ordered spiral arms of stars, gas, and dust. ESO 245-5 is an IB(s)m type of galaxy under the De Vaucouleurs galaxy classification system. This designation means that the galaxy is irregular (I) with no ordered structure. It is also barred (B), meaning it holds a dense bar of stars that crosses through its center. The third term ((s)) indicates that it has a slight spiral structure, while the last term (m) means it is a type of galaxy similar to the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds that are irregular satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. ESO 245-5 is a relatively close neighbor of the Milky Way. Astronomers Discover Brightest Quasar Ever: J0529-4351 Astronomers have found an extraordinary quasar named J0529-4351, which is the brightest object ever observed in the universe. Detected with the Very Large Telescope ( VLT) by the European Southern Observatory, this quasar has amazed scientists because of its incredible brightness and fast expansion. What is a Quasar? Quasars are incredibly bright centers of distant galaxies. They are powered by supermassive black holes at their cores. As gas and dust from the surrounding area fall into these black holes, they produce huge amounts of light and other forms of radiation, making quasars shine extremely brightly. The Discovery of J0529-4351 J0529-4351 is notable for being exceptionally bright and expanding very quickly. Astronomers Build Digital Camera As Big As A Car To Study Space With the camera's high resolution, astronomers aim to catalogue over 7.9 billion galaxies. American astronomers have built the largest digital camera on Earth and it's as big as a car SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California have completed the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Camera, and it's touted to revolutionise the way humans study space. The camera will be utilised at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile to capture deep space images from 2025 onwards The camera weighs three metric tons and will be mounted on the observatory's 27.5-foot-wide Simonyi Survey Telescope, allowing for rapid sky surveys. With the camera's high resolution, astronomers aim to catalogue over 7.9 billion galaxies Professor at the University of Washington, Mario Juric, envisions the camera as a "crawler and Google search for the sky", democratising access to astronomical data. "Now, rather than going to a large telescope (which sometimes can take months to propose, approve, and execute), a scientist will be able to go to a website, run a query, and get to the data in seconds. Huge improvement in efficiency and a democratization of access to best possible datasets," Juric said to Mashable. A rainbow 🌈 rises to the clouds over Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), a Program of NSF's NOIRLab. This #imageoftheweek, taken during one of the public stargazing programs at Kitt Peak, features the KPNO 2.1-meter telescope (right), operated by NOIRLab, and the Robotically Controlled Telescope (left), operated by the RCT consortium. In addition to cameras, many of the telescopes at KPNO are equipped with spectrographs which separate the light into its constituent colors, just as water droplets in rain clouds split sunlight into a rainbow. Knowing the amount of light that a celestial object produces at each wavelength allows scientists to measure the object’s various properties. With spectroscopy, we’ve measured the composition of exoplanetary atmospheres, the metallicity of stars, the motion of celestial planets, and the distances to far-away galaxies. More information can be learned through spectroscopy than from imaging alone, making it a crucial tool for studying the Universe. When astronomers turn radio telescopes out towards space, they sometimes detect sporadic bursts of radio waves originating from across the vast expanse of the universe. They are called “radio transients”: some erupt only once, never to be seen again, and others flicker on and off in predictable patterns. Recently, astronomers discovered a radio transient that isn’t like anything they have seen before. Not only does it have a cycle almost an hour long (the longest ever seen), but over several observations we saw it sometimes emitting long, bright flashes, sometimes fast, weak pulses – and sometimes nothing at all.
