European Southern Observatory’s Post

Great news for ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT): the support cell of its fifth mirror, M5, is now complete! M5 is the largest tip-tilt mirror in the world, and its impressive support cell will be able to steer the light gathered by the telescope up to 10 times per second to stabilise the images collected by the ELT. In 2006, I was the Project Manager for the ELT M5 Cell preliminary design and demonstrator and I am now really proud to see the delivery of this amazing final unit, the largest tip-tilt mechanism ever built. Thanks to all ESO and Sener teams that make "impossible" things 🙌

Happy to attend this important milestone in the development of the largest optical terrestrial telescope in the world, and happy to see how @ESO and @Sener project team has been able to overcome the technical difficulties of the M5 support cell; congratulations to all of you! Time to enjoy this important achievement!
