European Southern Observatory’s Post

No doubt that building a telescope mirror that measures over 39 meters across and is made of 798 high-tech pieces, is a huge challenge. But holding it all together? That's no small feat either! Watch our latest ELT video update to discover the colossal steel structure that will keep the 200 tonne main mirror safe and stable inside the ELT dome! 👇

I think about the human dedication and service at the frontier - far away from the comforts of urban society and family. I imagine working on construction up there has to be challenging, but rewarding. Also I hope these giant visible light telescopes when they come online give us some new insights into the universe.

It is indeed really challenging and also an honor to contribute to the ELT. VDL ETG Projects is now producing the final segment supports of the main mirror. I look forward to the ELT going live.

Mostly designed by EIE Group (ITA). Built by Cimolai (ITA).
