European Southern Observatory’s Post

Today we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first image of an exoplanet ever captured! The planet is 2M1207b, located 230 light-years from us. What have we learned about it since then? 🪐 It is a giant gas planet, believed to be five times the mass of Jupiter. 🪐 It orbits its star at a distance twice as far as Neptune is from the Sun. 🪐 The planet most probably did not form like those in our solar system, but rather like our Sun: by a one-step gravitational collapse. 📷 ESO
