"How Strategy Shapes Structure..." This concept flips the traditional view of business strategy, which suggests that structure dictates strategy. Instead, it argues that strategy should shape the structure of your organization. Let’s break it down. ☑ Principle 1: Structuralists vs. Reconstructionists ↳ Structuralists believe industries are fixed, and businesses must work within these constraints. ↳ Reconstructionists argue that organizations can reshape their industry environment through innovative strategies. ☑ Principle 2: Aligning Strategy with Environment ↳ Businesses must choose strategies that either adapt to current structures or transform them. ↳ Structuralists focus on operational efficiency, while reconstructionists prioritize differentiation and market creation. ☑ Principle 3: Winning with the Right Fit ↳ The key to success is choosing the right strategy for your industry context. ↳ Adapting structure to strategy allows firms to overcome limitations and outperform competitors. Understanding how strategy shapes structure can unlock new pathways to growth and competitive advantage—a Blue Ocean. If you found this insight valuable, follow me for more! 🙌

But what if we being confined by industry norms, reconstructionists that craft their own paths to challenges the status quo. On the other hand, structuralists excel at refining existing models but may miss opportunities for radical innovation. Love this approach btw Andrew Constable, DBA (Cand), MBA, BSP

That’s how I see it for sure Andrew. Your execution architecture—meaning your people, processes, structure, culture—should be developed directly from your core foundations: the what, where, why, and how. Unfortunately, this approach isn’t “standard practice.” Traditional organisations still adopt the idea that organisational architecture can be developed divorced from strategy. When it comes to organisational design, “just do whatever worked in the past” is the unconscious given in most leaders’ minds.

You lost me in your first paragraph. "Structure dictates Strategy" has never been a traditional view. You might argue it's an observable outcome. "Structure follows Strategy" has been mainstream for longer than most of today's managers have been alive!

Hi Andrew Constable, DBA (Cand), MBA, BSP, In my view, strategy should ALWAYS shape the structure of an organization, whether adopting a Structuralist or Reconstructionalist approach. When the article from HBR (mentioned below) refers to these approaches, it's talking about the "structure of the industry". A Structuralist will devise their strategy within the existing industry structure, while a Reconstructionalist aims to change the industry's structure itself—a Blue Ocean strategy. In both cases, an organization must structure itself to respond to the chosen strategy, underscoring that strategy should ALWAYS shape the structure of an organization.
