EU-SIMIA Meeting 2024: A Milestone for NHP Research Collaboration! 🧬 🐒 On 21-22 November 2024, EU-SIMIA held its first Meeting at the Institut des Sciences Cognitives Marc Jeannerod, UMR 5229 CNRS in Lyon, France. The event brought together 100+ researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders from across Europe, fostering collaboration and innovation in non-human primate (NHP) research. I'm happy to say I have a new article Nature Humanities and Social Sciences Communications with Kevin Outterson! https://lnkd.in/gWQPSzqV The long and the short of it - ・Many countries are now considering “pull incentives” to help stimulate research and development into new antimicrobials. ・Germany has declared at the G7 that it already has developed its own pull incentive by exempting certain antimicrobials from some aspects of benefit assessments and reference pricing, supposedly granting those antimicrobials higher prices. ・This paper considers the effectiveness of reimbursement policies to incentivize antimicrobial R&D by evaluating Germany’s actions against the potential impact of a delinked pull incentive, under the assumption that Germany would contribute it's 'fair share' to such an incentive. ・It found that Germany would need to either increase the volume of antimicrobials it uses or increase prices for the drugs covered by its incentive by as much as 3.3-times current values in order to achieve the same impact on revenue that a 'fair share'-sized pull incentive would have.

this is very welcome news the actual value of antimicrobials to health systems is unimaginable and we are approaching some evidence of wins this space is the investible arena for future healthcare as it provides extensive value to enable the existence of all modern treatments, we just lost the ball for (some!) years kudos to all those that have pushed this agenda over the years this is a "reason to be cheerful" but we must continue to extend the reach of value based economics into the foundations of all health and social care globally #valuebasedeconomics #amr #policyreform #untreatableinfection

I just learned about Katalin Karikó on X by Arif Ashraf (link in comments) referring to book, Breaking Through: My Life in Science. Karikó talks about how in academia (this holds true for many careers), you need more than just skill at your job. Succeeding requires "flattering people, schmoozing, being agreeable when you disagree, even when you are 100 percent certain you're right." You have to network, play politics, climb ladders. Karikó admits she had no interest in those things. She just wanted to focus on her science work. According to her Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia page, the University of Pennsylvania demoted her, cut her pay, and said she was "not of faculty quality." For over 20 years she was a poorly supported researcher there without tenure. But Katalin Karikó stuck to her principles. She didn't play the social games expected of her. And this path led her and colleague Drew Weissman to develop the mRNA vaccine technology that won them the 2023 The Nobel Prize in Medicine. Most of us have to follow the rules - schmooze, politic, pretend to agree. That's often the only way to get ahead professionally.
