Note: This is a good examination of how Russian disinformation had skewed a lot of initial Western assessments of what has become Russo-Ukraine War. In retrospect, the anemic Western response to the illegal Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 set the stage for the invasion of 2022

Why not allow Putin to annex another piece of Ukraine, to stop the war? Because it won’t stop Putin. Putin’s goal isn’t to take over 2 more regions of Ukraine (in addition to Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk, which Russia occupied in 2014 — yes, the Russia-Ukraine war is in its 11th year). Putin’s goal isn’t even to subdue the whole of Ukraine. Putin’s goal is to destroy the rule-based world order. Putin’s goal is to make the international borders uncertain, so any border can be moved, any territory invaded and annexed by another country. Putin’s goal is the world where countries have no sovereignty. They must be vassals of another power or they will cease to exist. Putin’s goal is the world with no universal human rights. Every powerful country can set its own rules of existence for its citizens and residents of the vassal countries, as well as change the rules anytime it wants, have a complete control over its citizens lives and property. Another bloody milestone, two years since Vladimir Putin launched the brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine and brought war once again to Europe. The global environmental and humanitarian challenges created by this war demand the unity of mankind and the mobilisation of all the resources and efforts. The largest war in Europe since WWII, caused by the Russian assault on Ukraine, lasting already two years, killing thousands of innocent people. ”However, if Ukraine falls, or is forced to accept some ugly peace on Moscow’s terms, then this will likely lead to recriminations and masochistic soul-searching with the Nato alliance and the wider ‘Collective West’. This will likely leave it divided and weakened. It will also be much less secure. There may be no evidence that Putin is currently contemplating a real threat to the West, but he (or a successor) might be tempted if, for example, Nato fragmented or lost its deterrent value. This is also a global issue. Putin is not out to destroy or rewrite the whole international order, but it is under pressure. Western leaders love to preach about their values-based foreign policy, but in the Global South this tends to be greeted with scepticism verging on the derisive. There’s the invasion of Iraq, the invasion and then abandonment of Afghanistan, the willingness to recognise politically-useful kleptocrats and authoritarians. The list of reasons to question our ‘values-based policies’ is as long as it is depressing.”

Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine in February, 2022, has led to Europe's bloodiest conflict since World War Two. Kyiv's outgunned and outmanned forces withstood Moscow's initial assault and won back territory in the second half of 2022, but the failure of a Western-backed Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2023 has allowed the Russian army to reclaim the battlefield initiative this year. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy attends a summit of at least 90 leaders and organisations in Switzerland at which he hopes to lay out a path to peace. Russia, which has not been invited, has dismissed the initiative as a waste of time, and China, its key ally since the war began, has said it would not attend.
