"All publicity is good publicity" - thanks in part to the most hyped, and most talked about Olympic Opening Ceremonies in modern times. And kudo's again for Paris 2024 - Comitรฉ d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 for reimagining the event to be more entertaining for the next generation of sporting fans. These Olympics games is surging in ratings across markets around the world. I told people on the weekend that the controversy would directly convert to viewers. It's must see TV. As of Tuesday Opening Ceremonies was still trending on X. In the US viewership is up 79% from Tokyoโs games. Yes a more favourable time zone, but also streaming platforms are more stable and better able to deliver the TV experience across all platforms, this includes allowing people to watch any and all events on demand, far cry from having make viewers get their Olympics via the heavily bundled nightly showcase. The just ended 2024 Paris Olympic Summer Games - Jeux Olympiques Paris 2024 - magnifiques were presented on my premium 4k Sony Bravia home televisions (and Apple 4K devices) in the following manner: 70% British Eurosport, 10% French Eurosport via Canal+, 10% athletics via Yle the pro Finnish Broadcaster, and the rest 10% Max Finland (including TV5, Kutonen), Swedish Kanal5, BBC, FranceTV, RTS Swiss, ZDF and RaiSport. The one program that stands out is Bonsoir Paris every night live on Eurosport UK Warner Bros. Discovery. Fun, informative and exciting. And the way British Eurosport covered the games is simply unbeatable, fresh and inspiring. The French version of Mon Paris with the outstanding night club fever was huge, trรจs grande. Two hours of pure party tous les soirs. Swedish Kanal5 also gets a big thumbs up with Jonas Karlsson and Carolina Klรผft in the studio. I could not end this story without giving my biggest credits to the coolest duo around Santeri Lรคhteensuo and Oona Tolppanen giving their best in Paris for Warner Bros Discovery Finland. I just don't get the added value of the #netflixslam, the one time exhibition tennis ๐พ match between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. This is meant to help cement Netflix as a reference in sports entertainment... There's literally no added drama, and no real alibi that makes this match up remotely special. Rafa and Carlos are still active professionals, it's not like you're bringing back a legend from retirement. This is not the first time they play each other, they've already faced each other several times at iconic tournaments (Madrid, Indian Wells). It won't be the last time they do probably, so much for playing for exclusivity or rarity. For reference, The Battle of The Sexes tennis match featuring Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs in 1975 at least had a point to prove. The venue (Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas) is underwhelming to say the least, compared to some breathtaking stadium backdrops on the regular tour. The regular interventions, commentaries, and celebrity interviews (with flashbacks) added more noise than anything really. ๐ค From a #marketing point of view, this event generated awareness and brought eyeballs but the execution and substance was sub-par. The only enjoyment was watching two elite players displaying their crafts. However, you can already do that watching the 50+ tournaments available across rival networks. Netflix so far simply does not understand tennis (hm hm, Break Point) and has not nailed sports entertainment yet. #sportsmarketing #streaming #tennis #keepitsimple
