25 November, Klättercentret Akalla, Stockholm The La Sportiva Legends Only is an invitational bouldering competition for the best of the beasts. Five or six athletes are invited. Could be because of their accomplishments on the competition scene, on rock or something else. Honestly…it’s rarely “something else”. The problems are very, very difficult. Often even harder than that. Typically in the ~8B – 8C range. This year we’re going old school… A big difference compared to other competitions is that the athletes get to work on four of the five problems during a session two days before the competition. Another difference is that, instead of a fixed amount of time, they each have three attempts per problem. Except for the last problem, there is no isolation, so the athletes can watch and cheer for each other. The competition will be live-streamed and commentated by our excellent team of Emil Abrahamsson and Sofya Yokoyama. Even better is of course to watch the competition live at Klättercentret Akalla. Annually, the quaint town of Sonkajaervi in Finland transforms into the epicenter of a uniquely entertaining spectacle—the International Wife Carrying Championships. This captivating competition challenges husbands to navigate a 250-meter track, replete with a series of obstacles both on land and a 1-meter deep water pool. The rules dictate that participants can carry either their wives or neighbors, with a caveat that the wife must be at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 49 kilos. For lighter spouses, an additional rucksack is mandated. Carrying techniques vary, ranging from piggyback to over-the-shoulder, and the unconventional Estonian-style, where wives hang upside-down with legs around their husbands' shoulders and hold onto his waist. In this spirited race, participants are armed only with a helmet and a belt. Two couples start simultaneously, sprinting with all their might to conquer the course. The victorious couple is the one completing the challenge in the shortest time. Beyond the primary prize, accolades are also bestowed upon the most entertaining couple, the strongest carrier, and those adorned in the most captivating costumes. Shameful behaviour by the runners concerned. We see it so regularly at the front of races and they genuinely seem oblivious to their impact. I know clubs and events regularly use our images to check ! One thing that would cut down on this sort of thing would be using many timing companies race entry capabilities to enable participants to “giveaway” numbers to someone else right up to the start. I know many timing companies have a simple single button feature and enter an email address to giveaway a race entry to someone else - and that person simply goes online and enters their new/replacement details. No work for the race organisers and all legitimate and correct for results and insurance, and no need for refunds or cash payments. But race organisers need to promote the capability and encourage “legal” swaps / giveaways- for no other reason than to get as many people running on the day. I rarely see it promoted in the last minute comms, and I don’t see the easy solutions that are already there being utilised. It’s all there already to make things easy for everyone to giveaway a race entry right up to the race start - and then - even tougher sanctions can justifiably be brought against those who spoil it for everyone else.
