📢 In Denmark, the iodine fortification level was increased in 2019: what are the health effects? Denmark introduced a mandatory iodine fortification of salt and salt was included as an ingredient in bread and bakery products in 2000. 📍 In 2019, the fortification level was increased from 13 ppm to 20 ppm to help eradicate still-existing mild to moderate iodine deficiency. What are the results of this increased level of fortification? 📍 According to a recent study, the prevention of low IQ in children due to maternal iodine deficiency was the primary contributor to overall health gain.* 📍The study highlights that as the optimal iodine intake is a narrow interval, monitoring of the effects of fortification programmes is important and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). "Health Alert" In 2018, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released guidelines to eradicate Industrial Produced Transfatty Acid (IP-TFA) from the global food system by 2023, while limiting it to less than 1pc of total energy intake to decrease mortality due to CVDs. In 2023, the WHO officially recognised and certified five countries — Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Poland and Thailand — that have met the deadline. Although in Pakistan the government has formulated policies for IP-TFA eradication, not much has changed on the ground. Moreover, there is a need for strict and compulsory labelling to depict the percentage of IP-TFA in the food product to improve compliance. Policies should be updated and clearly defined for the implementation and enforcement of regulation.

World Health Organization published the second edition of the WHO Global Sodium Benchmarks to guide the implementation of targets to reduce sodium content in processed and packaged food. The WHO has established the second edition of the Global Sodium Benchmarks levels in 70 food subcategories as part of WHO’s efforts in reducing the sodium intakes in populations. Make sure to check out this important document:

🔴 Antimicrobial resistance could reduce life expectancy by nearly 2 years by 2035 👇 According to a study by the Global Leaders Group on AMR published last Friday, there could be an average loss of 1.8 years of life expectancy worldwide by 2035 due to antimicrobial resistance. This study also estimates the economic costs of this global health issue, projected to cost the world $412 billion annually in additional healthcare costs and $443 billion in lost labour productivity. In this context, the analysis shows that implementing a package of intersectoral interventions against AMR globally, costing an average of $46 billion annually, would yield economic and health benefits. «We have tools to mitigate the AMR crisis, and if we don’t take bold action now, the data point to a devastating future,» says the president of the Global Leaders Group on AMR. In June 2023, WHO launched its One Health priority research agenda to stimulate scientific interest and financial investments to prevent and mitigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR).   One Health acknowledges the interconnectedness and interdependence of the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the broader environment, including ecosystems.   With November including both #AMRAwarenessWeek and #OneHealthDay, let's continue to advocate for integrated and holistic approaches to health challenges, including AMR, and highlight the importance of mobilising multiple sectors, disciplines, and communities to collaborate and address threats to health and ecosystems.
