When I woke up to the headline on April 30th, “Tesla to Layoff Entire Supercharging Team,” I thought it was just another article looking for clicks. Then I logged on to Teams and saw messages from our North American leader, Max de Zegher. That’s when I got a sinking feeling in my stomach. He was kind and reflective, thanking us for the effort we’ve all put forth over the life of the Supercharging org, and leaving us with some final words of encouragement: ‘Charge On’. When I saw his Teams status appear as the dreaded gray circle, I knew this wasn’t just another article - I knew I was losing my job. Over the next 36 hours, we said our goodbyes as we waited to get locked out of our computers ourselves, having seen the same already happen to our US colleagues. There were many jokes and references to the Titanic during this time; we were just missing the string quartet! We tried to put on a brave face in a difficult time and accept the fact that we’d be losing the incredible team atmosphere that Tesla is known for (which really is true, by the way). I’ve never been so aligned and in sync with ALL of my colleagues before, sharing a passion and urgency that’ll be hard to find anywhere else. To the Canadian Supercharging team: I’ll miss working with you all dearly. You’ve made my time at Tesla extremely memorable and I thank you all for your impact, not only for building an amazing network across the country, but also for being so supportive each day. Dissolving the team will leave a huge gap in our deployment of EV charging in a time where demand continues to increase. Tesla has abandoned hundreds of projects across Canada, and many more worldwide, leaving contractors, site hosts, and vendors to pick up the pieces. With or without Tesla, there’s still a ton of work to be done on our way to electrifying the nation, to making EV charging accessible for all. I’ve been inspired by many LinkedIn posts over the past week, embodying the message to ‘Charge On’. I’m excited to follow suit and announce that I’m doing exactly that, by launching a new company: Charge On Consulting Corp. is on a mission to ensure all Canadians have access to a reliable EV charging network. Founded on the same principles that made our Tesla Supercharging team so successful, we’re here to help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by sharing our industry expertise and combining our many years of experience in real estate, development, policy, design, and construction to make it happen. FreeWire closes its HQ and lays off just about everyone Novel EV fast charging solution FreeWire has announced plans to close its Newark corporate headquarters and lay off virtually all of its employees. FreeWire is able to place DC fast charging solutions without the need for expensive utility buildouts by using batteries to store energy until it’s needed. The batteries can be effectively “trickle charged” with a standard 110 or 220 AC connection, then “dump” that charge quickly – enabling a 200 kW DCFC experience for EV drivers at a fraction of the cost of conventional DC infrastructure. It’s a clever system, but despite high-profile mentions from the Biden-Harris Administration and freshly inked deals with national brands like Chevron and General Motors, reports indicate that FreeWire will shutter its primary business in Newark, California this June. https://lnkd.in/ez8-AD2U
