I recently led a workshop where the noise from next door interfered with my session. What you do to make sure ambient sounds are not distracting to participants? I’m writing about the topic in my next RtR message. Are your students comfortable reflecting on their own experiences? Are we, as teachers, comfortable doing this? This is an important first step in asking our students (and ourselves) to understand and appreciate other cultures and experiences. Today I speak with Jocelynn Hubbard, host of The Culture-Centered Classroom, about how we can engage students in their own cultural self-reflection. We will also learn to do it ourselves. **Topics in this Episode** --what cultural self-reflection is and its impact on students in the classroom the process of self-reflection with examples of the types of resources that you use to support the process of cultural self-reflection --how to introduce this practice to your students, and some possible challenges that might come up --how to create a safe and inclusive environment for your students to explore and discuss their cultural identity openly --how cultural self-reflection has influenced Jocelynn’s teaching approach and helped her to better meet the individual needs of her students

💡 Embrace the paraphrased wisdom of John Dewey: "We learn from reflecting on experience." As educators, fostering self-reflection is key to deeper learning. Whether you're using EntreCulturas, EntreCultures, or InterKulturell, Wayside's resources empower students to reflect on their language journey. With Can-Do statements aligned to unit goals, students can track progress and enhance their learning journey. "Who Will Bell the Cat?" 😺 🐭 Today, I randomly thought of this particular cartoon I had watched as a child and marvelled about its relevance in my state of affairs. Vision vs. Reality: The Mouse's Dilemma Aesop's "Who Will Bell the Cat?" illustrates the challenge of translating lofty visions into practical actions. In the cartoon, the mice recognize the need to bell the cat for safety but face the daunting task of implementation. Lesson 1: From Idea to Action 💡 Merely having an idea isn't enough; execution is key. Concrete steps must be taken to turn ideas into reality. Without implementation, even the best plans remain mere concepts. Lesson 2: Crafting Effective Strategies Successful execution requires more than just a plan—it demands tailored strategies that address specific challenges. Without a feasible execution strategy, even the most brilliant ideas fall short. Lesson 3: The Power of Collaboration Individual efforts are insufficient; collective commitment and collaboration are essential for success. Without buy-in from all stakeholders, even the most promising plans are destined to fail. In Conclusion: Bridging the Gap Aesop's fable serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of bridging the gap between vision and execution. By strategically planning, collaborating effectively, and committing to shared goals, we can turn our visions into reality. Let us heed this lesson as we navigate our own endeavors, striving for diligent execution and shared commitment. Take a few minutes to watch this amazing illustration in this cartoon below. Please share any reflections in the comments. Do you remember watching this when you were younger? #whowillbellthecat #aesopfable #powerofexecution #smallbusiness https://lnkd.in/ehUw-8hX

International Public Speaking Coach. TEDx Coach. Four #1 Amazon Bestselling Books. Eight National Public Speaking Titles. Hiking. Rugby. Star Wars. Cats. (Not necessarily in that order).
The Speech Evaluation Contest always holds a special place in my heart, as it's the first national title I won back in 2019. Incredibly, this is the first time the contest has been in-person since 2019! I couldn't repeat my success from last year, getting pipped at the post into second place. In the spirit of evaluation, what do I think I did well and not so well? Starting off (like in my evaluation) with the positives. 1) One thing I've been working on over the last few months is making my evaluations more educational. For example instead of just saying "the speaker used the rule of three well", I explain why the rule of three is effective, bringing more value to the audience. 2) Seeing as this is our first time back in person in 5 years, I definitely wanted to elicit some audience response and get them involved. I did this with a rhetorical question and some humour (more on that later) 3) An area where I messed up in the UK and Ireland finals last year was only giving feedback on delivery, but not content. I changed my note taking process over the last 12 months to ensure I didn't make the mistake again. I'm happy that I was able to dig deep into suggestions with two recommendation for delivery (stage use and body language) and two recommendations for content (questions and final line) And where to improve? 1) I believe that winning a contest involves taking a risk. In 2019, I took a risk spinning around a pillar like a stripper and the audience burst out laughing and I'm pretty sure it sealed my victory. In this evaluation, I took a risk with an edgy joke to begin with, and it fell pretty flat. If I had started in a different way, I may have been looked on a little more favourably. 2) Some of my fluidity wasn't 100% there. There were a couple of lines I stumbled upon, I relied on just a few adjectives rather than having a wide variety of them and I didn't summarise my suggestions with much depth and emphasise. Small margins perhaps, but that's what counts at the upper levels of the contest. #toastmasters #toastmasterscontests #toastmastersevaluation

Advanced Chinese Reading Lesson: 'The Singing of the Bluebird'. This (first published in 《读者》 in 2014) is one of my favourite contemporary short stories, East meets West, rich meets poor, modernity meets eternity, the wilderness meets the machine. #learnchinese #advancedchinese #对外汉语 #文学 #读者 #languagelearning #languageeducation #languageservices

Helping leaders create shared responsibility for fund development and results in their teams and organizations. Your stakeholders determine whether your future vision comes true.
2moDoh! That's rough! I'd see if there's a tie in with the workshop. For example, I frequently teach active listening skills and group decision making skills, and also coach leadership teams on rituals to support moving through tension. Turning this disruption into a topic to explore skills being taught is a way to be playful about reality in the moment. I try to ask myself: how might what's happening in the moment be a metaphor for what folks in the room have to deal with on the daily?
