I got this quote from a teacher just outside of the Houston, Texas area who contributed her own knowledge and expertise to the #TeachersServeToo book project. We did countless interviews with superintendents, admin leaders, and industry experts...but this quote was one that still haunts me. This experience pains my heart and highlights a stark reality: The system fails to care for those who have devoted their lives to service. Educators, who spend decades nurturing and shaping future generations, deserve better support and care in their retirement years. The fact that so many former educators return to the classroom or have to take on additional work in their retirement years not out of passion but necessity, speaks volumes about the gaps in our support systems. It’s the story of countless educators who face similar struggles. As a society, we must advocate for better healthcare and retirement benefits for our teachers. They deserve to retire with dignity, without the fear of medical bills or the inflated cost of living driving them back into the workforce. Let’s honor their service by building a system that truly cares. #TeachersServeToo #SupportOurTeachers #EducatorsDeserveBetter #RetirementWithDignity

Evan Erdberg there are countless teachers I have known throughout the years who were friends of my mom’s where they often took second jobs to pay the bills, and these are professionals who’ve tought several decades. Some of these people left teaching altogether as their second jobs were giving them much bettter pay and benefits. School boards, administrators, and even state boards can argue they give teachers the best pay and benefits. Than why are so many great people leaving the profession where they can make more money for themselves and provide a better life for their families than they could teaching? Your story is one of many, and sadly there’s so many more like it.

What is being done about it? Nothing. Hasn’t been in many many years. You’ve been to Milwaukee, WI… did you see the latest MPS Board Meeting? And will anything change despite how upset people are? Probably just a little bandaid until it blows over.

This is so sad -- and yet it is true. In the Commonwealth of Kentucky, I am not entitled to my husband's social security check should he pass before me. This is a system that doesn't care about the teacher. Yes, teachers serve too.

It's definitely worse in third world countries and I honestly don't know why it is so.
