Today I had the opportunity to return on The Social to talk about homelessness, this time with a focus on winter. There were only a few minutes to cover a lot of ground, and so of course, it was not enough time. there was lots to say: busses as shelters, “fire safety”, encampment evictions, and discussing not being able to donate our way out of a crisis. i am glad i got to name the ridiculous removal of a bus shelter in the name of safety and the need to divest from cops, AND gosh, instead of trying to hide homelessness from our kids, teach compassion - but there were three key things I did not get to mention: 1. We need to centre the voices of people who are unhoused, with lived experiences. They need to be part of these media conversations, policy decisions. yes, this segment did not have that, i know. 2. We don’t need just winter plan; we need a year-round emergency water response plan: heat, smog, fog, storms... the climate crisis disproportionately affects people who are poor and unhoused 3. We need to repeatedly ask better questions: instead of villainizing individuals, critique the system, and mobilize for change. “we cannot donate our way out of this crisis… we need to pair it with political action… we need to create not more food banks, but a reality where people don’t rely on food banks; one where people have access to what they need” https://lnkd.in/gYDC9vyn

Today, on 9/11, we remember the lives lost and the incredible resilience that followed one of our nation's darkest days. The spirit of compassion that brought us together after the tragedy remains a powerful reminder of how we can support each other in times of crisis. At Open Doors, we believe that same spirit can help us address another urgent challenge: homelessness. #NeverForget #CommunityResilience #OpenDoors #OpenDoorsAtlanta

We don’t wait to respond to a natural disaster—why would we wait to address homelessness? 🔨Quick-build housing takes this crisis seriously, offering immediate shelter for those in need, not just promises for the future. 🏠Yes, affordable permanent housing is the goal, but people need a roof over their heads *today*. San José Mayor Matt Mahan is applying emergency management principles to ensure that, while we work on long-term solutions, no one is left out in the cold. When we treat homelessness as the emergency it is, we can make real change—right now. What do you think about taking urgent action like this? #Homelessness #StateOfEmergency #EmergencyManagement #SanJose #SantaClaraCounty #Housing

Civil Engineers need to be rallying against the oppression that is being placed on our unhoused communities. American engineers regularly apply their problem-solving skills to improving the human condition and quality of life. But when it comes to one of the most pressing social problems in the nation’s cities—our homeless population. The most visible examples of Civil Engineering are often ones that deprive these individuals of comfortable places to rest and sleep. These range from “no-sit benches” that you can only lean against to strategically placed rocks embedded in flat surfaces to the use of uncomfortable material to fences put up to block homeless encampments. Daily impediments reinforce what some unhoused people see as a callous attitude on the part of authorities and engineers who work under their lead.
Today, #SCOTUS gave localities permission to punish unhoused community members simply for existing outdoors, even when there aren’t enough shelter beds available. Now, our leaders must truly lead, modeling meaningful solutions instead of cheap, cruel & unsustainable shortcuts that only obscure our problems at the expense of our most vulnerable neighbors. Homelessness is not a crime, it’s a policy choice. The only way to address homelessness is to house people and to keep people housed. #GrantsPassVJohnson

In a recent ruling that has sent shockwaves through our community, the Grants Pass court decision stands as a stark reminder of the potential long-term damage that can result from misguided legal actions. The decision to criminalize certain behaviors not only fails to address the root causes of complex social and health problems but also threatens to undo the hard-won progress made in reducing stigma, restoring dignity, and educating our society. By choosing punitive measures over compassionate and holistic solutions, the Grants Pass ruling risks perpetuating cycles of harm and exclusion that only serve to deepen existing social divides. Criminalization often exacerbates the very issues it seeks to address, pushing vulnerable individuals further into the margins of society and hindering their access to essential support systems and resources. Unfortunately, the fallout from this decision is not limited to the immediate impact on those directly affected by the ruling. It has the potential to erode the trust and collaboration built between local communities and justice systems. Prioritizing punishment over rehabilitation and support, we risk alienating those in need and further entrenching harmful stereotypes and biases. Let this ruling serve as a wake-up call to the dangers of short-sighted and punitive approaches to social issues. I stand firm in my commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society, one that values the dignity and well-being of all its members. Two steps backwards doesn't mean I won't still take one step forward. #GrantsPassRuling
