As someone on the autism spectrum, Alex often finds new environments overwhelming, leading to heightened anxiety. The bustling life and expansive layout of CMU's campus initially seemed like a formidable challenge. However, a groundbreaking partnership between CMU and Able Eyes would transform Alex's university journey. Able Eyes has meticulously created virtual tours for key locations on campus, including Park Library, Grawn Hall, Finch Fieldhouse, the College of Education & Human Services, and Wightman Hall. This initiative allowed Alex to embark on a digital exploration of these essential spaces, providing a sense of familiarity and reducing the stress of navigating them in person. For Alex, these virtual tours were more than just a preview; they were a lifeline. Being able to "visit" these spaces from the comfort of home meant that Alex could plan routes, identify quiet areas for breaks, and gain confidence in moving from one class to another. The once intimidating campus now felt welcoming, with each virtual step paving the way for real-life adventures. The partnership between Central Michigan University and Able Eyes highlights the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in education. In Class 2 at Mayoor School, our young learners embarked on an exciting journey into the world of light and shadow! With flashlights in hand and everyday objects, they experimented to understand how shadows are formed when light is blocked. Through this engaging hands-on activity, they discovered that the size and shape of shadows change based on the position and distance of the light source. The students were captivated by how shadows can stretch, shrink, or shift, depending on the angle and proximity of the light. This practical exploration not only made the concept of shadows more relatable but also sparked curiosity and a love for science among our young minds. Just spent a few days with school leaders in Boston. No matter the conversation, the topic kept coming back to two things: leadership and culture. Schools and school leaders face unprecedented challenges, many of which are extremely complex. Graduate programs don’t do a great job preparing educators to become administrators. That skill is often learned on the job. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of old and outdated thinking out there. If we’re going to lead for the future, we need to start asking a different set of questions. My friend Joshua Starr at The Center for Model Schools calls this #AdaptiveLeadership. He lays out a 5-part framework for it in this article that I think is fantastic! If you have two minutes, give it a quick read.
