Yesterday, 11 Alive News ran a story about Our Turn Atlanta’s successful initiative to create a student mental health community board and pilot it in the 2024 - 25 school year. Over this last year, my fellows and APS students have been working hard to advocate for this board at a district-wide level, and they have been successful. Thanks to the work of these civically active students, Atlanta public school students will now have the ability to dictate how mental health services are marketed and implemented in their local school system. They will also have the opportunity to do peer-to-peer mental health services because they believe that those affected should be leading the solution. During this election cycle, you’re going to see a lot of articles, news stories, and social media posts about young people not being engaged and not being involved, and when you see those things and lose hope, I recommend you read this article.
