Establishing your brand is much like trying to set up a base in a jungle, says our creative director, Chris, a former Royal Marines Commando officer. You have to cut through dense, tangled obstacles in a busy, chaotic environment to make sure you can operate in a crowded brand space. Each small, seemingly insignificant action, like trimming a vine, developing your logo, making your ‘A-frame’ and crafting your 'Unique Selling Proposition' statement feels like it does little, but it's crucial in the long run. Some big and exciting news..... The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) is going out to tender for service support with our brand development programme. The NMRN has had an extraordinary expansion over its short 15 years and boasts an incredible portfolio of Ship’s, Museums and Attractions across the UK. These sites enable us to tell incredible stories and showcase our internationally significant collections. However, that rapid growth has not given space for a strategic review of the brand and we acknowledge that that is well overdue, so that this marks a critical moment in our evolution. We want to be bold. We want to be ambitious. We are a National Museum, but our ability to deliver our charitable objectives relies on our continued commercial success so we need a brand that can turbo charge those activities. Mayfair, 1974. As The Naval & Military Club, colloquially coined The In & Out, housed its usual mischief — fuelled by fine whiskey and the retrospective luxury of indoor smoking — the IRA, at the height of their campaign against Britain, launched a bomb into the Clubhouse. In the (casualty-free) destruction and subsequent silence came one clear demand: “Another pink gin please, Robbins.” Members’ clubs have always been places to gather, plot, indulge — mostly bomb-free although we can pinpoint a fair few explosive scandals along the timeline. But the members’ club of 2024 would be unrecognisable to habitués of the Club half a century ago. What were once dens of deviance (some lighthearted, some not) have become homes of inclusive exclusivity, homages to high design and epicentres of culture. As we track the history of private members' clubs from early inception to newer offerings, what can the concept's transformation reveal about the state of membership today?
