As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, it's vital to acknowledge the reality many face in the United States: 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. Only 47.2% of U.S. adults with mental illness received treatment in 2021. 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness annually. Only 65.4% of U.S. adults with serious mental illness received treatment in 2021. 1 in 6 U.S. youth have a mental health condition, yet only half receive treatment. 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24. These statistics highlight the urgent need for accessible mental health services and the importance of early intervention. Let's work together to break the stigma and support mental health and wellness in our communities. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthMatters #EarlyIntervention

We know mental illness does not discriminate; it affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, education levels, genders, ages, races and ethnicities. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports: • 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year and less than half of them receive treatment. • 1 in 6 adolescents will experience a mental health condition. • 1 in 8 ED visits involve patients with mental illness and substance use disorders. With increased conversations and awareness, we see perceptions of mental illness and substance changing. With our mental health services and commitment, we hope to give our patients and their families a healthier and more hopeful tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/eXMQDDHg #ImproveMoreLives

#NationalRecoveryMonth and #SuicidePreventionMonth shine a light on the incredible need for specialized mental health care. 5% of U.S. adults face severe mental illness. Yet, the supply of mental health professionals is alarmingly low, with more than a third of the U.S. population in areas with significant shortages. Supporting members with complex mental health issues requires a tailored, comprehensive approach. Through #LyraComplexCare, members with high-acuity needs can get matched with the right level of evidence-based care nationwide. https://bit.ly/49HUuJy

Working with the severely mentally ill population requires more than just an hour of therapy. There is family who are hurting and who need help just as much as the “identified patient” in learning how to deal with their relative. When I was working, I also had to deal with the court system in order for them to understand the illness. Then there are not nearly enough places to house and treat, long term, people who have come in contact with the criminal justice system. “Treatment” is usually of short duration (a month or less) and there is virtually no aftercare provided. This is due to a miriad of reasons, not enough clinicians, not enough money, and lack of concern from taxpayers who are without a mentally ill relative. The follow up by the mental health centers is poor, due to lack of funding and too few clinicians. Mental health centers typically utilize the least experienced clinicians when what is needed is experienced clinicians, at least as supervisors. Sometimes, the job doesn’t end at 5. A crisis comes up at 4:30, you can’t say come back tomorrow. There is no overtime pay, time off is minimal, and mental health days don’t exist. This is a high stress job, with few thanks and perks.
The current state of mental health care in the United States is troubling. Mental health organizations are understaffed. People are unable to access or afford mental health services. Solutions to the shortage of mental health providers are often as complex as the reasons behind it. https://bit.ly/4cBDp6p
