🎙️ New Podcast Episode Alert - Peri Menopause Power with Natalie Moore and 🌸Lisa Saunders I loved chatting with Nat and Lisa on their podcast about women's unique relationship with alcohol, and its impact during midlife and peri menopause. This is a topic that most women don't know enough about and given women in midlife are binge drinking at increasing levels, it's important that we start to generate awareness about and provide platforms to have these conversations. Some important facts about women and alcohol that you might not know are: 🔹 Alcohol affects women's bodies to mens, which makes them more vulnerable to health risks caused by alcohol. 🔹 Women are more deficient in the metabolising enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which helps the body break down and eliminate alcohol. This means a higher amount of alcohol enters the bloodstream. 🔹 Women's liver volume shrinks during perimenopause between 1-3 per cent each year, which means they are more likely to develop liver disease compared with men 🔹 Fluctuating hormones can impact how intoxicated women become. This can depend on the time of the month and how high their oestrogen levels are 🔹 Drinking alcohol can lead to an increase in circulating oestrogen, which can cause hormone driven breast cancers in women We cover a number of other topics including: how alcohol is often used as a coping mechanism and how we need to learn and normalise healthier coping strategies for managing stress and navigating life's transitions. Thanks again to Lisa and Nat for the fabulous work they are doing in women's health, particularly empowering women in midlife to learn about and understand their bodies. Therapeutic coach. Helping organisations retain their midlife executives by helping them go from menopausal muddle to midlife magic | Menopause coach | 1-2-1 coaching | Corporate coaching
I originally posted this on Instagram a while ago, but a conversation I just had with someone who’s in their 40s but doesn’t see themselves in the category of “perimenopausal”reminded me about it. We all need to be aware that those hormonal shifts are happening whether we feel them or not. Much better to be prepared and educated before you even get to the point of having any symptoms. This is why I set up the Master your Midlife ( https://lnkd.in/evcgJkGD ) support group, for those who are experiencing peri and post menopause but also for those of us who aren’t there yet but know it’s coming down the road - let’s not go into this blind. It’s not so scary when you know the facts 🥰 Original post by Emma Bardwell: If you’re in your 40s I think it’s safe to assume you’re in perimenopause. You might not have any obvious symptoms. Your periods might be super regular. But hormonal changes are happening. This doesn’t need to be worrying or alarming, I just want you to be aware that it’s happening. It’s the lack of understanding and foresight that throws most of the women I see, by the time they reach out for help, they’re already struggling. Forewarned is forearmed. Make sure you know what you might expect and have some strategies in place (read, research, listen to podcasts, talk to your mum, ask your friends). That way you’re much more likely to be in control during the transition. Tag your 40-something friends in the comments. It’s never too early to start thinking about your future health: esp bones, heart and brain.
