Celebrating My Daughter's First Birthday: Reflections on Values and Truths "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows." – George Orwell, 1984 Orwell’s 1984 isn’t my favorite book (or even top dystopian novel... praise be to Huxley’s Soma soaked Brave New World), but this past year—culminating in my youngest daughter’s first birthday—has made me reflect deeply on the values and truths I hold dear. As I think about the world she’s growing up in, several principles stand out to me: Short-term solutions don’t solve long-term problems. Hard work for the illusion of progress is worse than doing nothing. There’s no such thing as a free lunch; someone always pays. The politically easy choice is rarely the right choice. In essence, we must take our bitter medicine, eat our vegetables, and strive to leave the world better than we found it. Most importantly, we must teach these lessons by example to the next generation. Here's to embracing uncomfortable truths and building a better future for others.
