Beyond Sustainability: Embracing Regenerative Community-Based Hospitality Last week, I had the honor of speaking at The Cloud’s Amazing Green Fest 2024 on how the hospitality industry can move beyond traditional sustainability and embrace regenerative design—an approach that actively restores and revitalizes the environments and communities we’re a part of. Here are a few key takeaways from my speech: 1. “Sustainability” Is Not Enough: What’s often labeled as “sustainable” is the bare minimum. Small changes, like low-energy appliances and compostable straws, on their own fall short of the deep, systemic transformation needed to heal environmental and social damage. 2. Beware of Greenwashing: Companies sometimes falsely market products as eco-friendly, creating more harm than good. True sustainability requires alignment between our actions and the positive impact we seek. **I'm especially frustrated by the wide adoption of these resin products using 30-40% up-cycled products like rice husk. If the other 60-70%% is resin, it is non compostable, non-recyclable, and the end of life will just be in a landfill. (feel free to ask me more about this) 3. Regeneration Creates Net-Positive Impact: It’s not just about reducing harm. Regenerative design actively improves ecosystems and communities. In hospitality, this means responsible sourcing, involving local communities in decision-making, and ensuring that tourism supports cultural and environmental preservation. 4. Intersectionality Is Key: Sustainability isn’t just about protecting the planet. It’s also about ensuring the well-being of the people who depend on it. We must consider the social, environmental, and economic impacts of our actions, ensuring that our efforts are as beneficial for communities as they are for the planet. At Asian Oasis, we’re working to embed these principles in everything we do—from community development efforts at Lisu Lodge to management capacity building at Araksa Tea Garden. But we recognize that there’s always more to be done. Regeneration is a journey, not a destination. Let’s continue this conversation—how can we work towards a more regenerative future together? #Sustainability #RegenerativeTourism #Hospitality #CommunityBasedTourism #Leadership #FutureOfTourism
