Our institutions need to champion self-directed learning #skilldevelopment and integrate comprehensive SDL supports into our #teachingandlearning efforts. That starts with building an awareness of this research and the implications for investments in supports for #faculty, #students and staff among our leadership and administrative teams. Achieving the Dream has worked with network #colleges on different aspects of #onlinelearning and better integrating technology into more #studentcentered teaching and learning. Efforts, such as our work around #openeducationalresources and adopting #adaptivecourseware in #introductorycourses through the Every Learner Everywhere initiative, offer important lessons to consider as we think about building #SDLskills and knowledge into our courses and #professionallearning. Here are 6 things to consider from the American Association of Community Colleges: https://ow.ly/aVxx50TgTv2

Coaching to empower better learning (and podcasting)@ iArticulate | Increasing access to learning through nature @ Discoveryoutdoors.org
Alex Gray: "One of the primary reasons in-school CPD programs fail is the lack of continuous engagement." This is a common feeling, and it is exactly why iArticulate exists and what we work to inspire. Educators often find solutions in an MA or external training which is excellent learning, but to promote continuous engagement, how can schools make learning, collaboration and sharing part of regular practice? A simple prompt to test this - Are your schools mission and values lived as shared practices modelled in the faculty/student experience? Technology is an important part of the solution, I would promote all of your proposed ideas. I also see a danger in accepting a mix of PD that doesn't always support a shared vision of learning. This simplifies your message a lot, of course; however, I see a more complex issue. Technology is clearly a key enabler. Can it compensate for a lack of collective vision and collaboration? If you are looking for inspiration for your school, Frankfurt International School's Day H builds it into the timetable, and Leysin American School in Switzerland's LASER programme led by Paul Magnuson develops a culture around research-based PD. iArticulate Educational Consultants partner with schools to build collaborative PD around a shared vision. Check them out for further insight and keep looking, there is more out there. Thanks Alex Gray for this inspiration and sharing these techniques.

Until I had read this article, I had been toying with the phrase Standardized Personalization to align with my ideas for how to personalize learning for students and staff. from the article: "'...'personalization' doesn’t (necessarily) seem to challenge the goals or the curriculum of traditional education. Instead, it promises to move students towards those goals more effectively, more efficiently... 'Personalization' is simply a matter of how the technology optimizes a student's path through the standardization." I strongly agree with one point of this article - that "personalized learning" has been co-opted into a traditional schooling structure that is actually personalizing teaching to move students through a curriculum more efficiently, and not personalizing learning to help students achieve mastery of course objectives in ways that are meaningful to students. However, a course is defined by its course objectives so the goals of a course are essentially standardized to meet school accreditation - but this isn't the issue. The issue is how we have created an incentive structure for our school system to reward efficiency of scheduled course completion as a measure of achievement over student mastery of course objectives, an incentive structure in which the idea of "personalization" has been programmed to support. To transform the incentive structure, we must first identify how that structure is designed. From there, we'll discover how "personalized learning" requires transformation of how we measure achievement of student learning and, likewise, how we reward that achievement to motivate change in behaviors and expectations of school and district leaders. QUESTION: How do you see the incentive structure of schools impacting the potential for effective personalized learning? https://lnkd.in/ggMjFSBN

🔍 Competency-Based Learning: Moving from Policy to Practice All 50 U.S. states now allow competency-based learning (CBL), a model that focuses on students mastering skills at their own pace rather than progressing based on time spent in class. While schools have the flexibility to adopt CBL, the transition remains challenging. Many educators support the model's core principles, but the complexities of implementation, such as developing new assessments and securing buy-in from all stakeholders, remain significant hurdles. Despite these challenges, CBL has the potential to reshape education by focusing on mastery and personalized learning. #EdTech #CompetencyBasedLearning #PersonalizedLearning #K12Education #StudentCenteredLearning Source: https://lnkd.in/gncmD6tJ

The article attached here has a great message: a "profile of a graduate" or "learner profile" is a North Star for redesigning a school to be learner-centered. However, it does have me thinking... ...if the redesign happens from a teacher-centered perspective, how is that redesign going to improve upon the existing teacher-centered structure? How would you know if you are viewing an educational restructuring from a teacher-centered or student-centered perspective? Try this: When it comes to decision-making in a classroom learning space, regardless of whether that space is mandated to focus on specific academic standards, who is making the decisions each day, or each week, about *what* needs to be learned, by *when*, *how*, and *why*? This is 1 of 7 elements of culture that will define how you restructure your classroom learning spaces, ultimately redefining the culture of "school". If your efforts to redesign education are embedded in a culture that involves teachers deciding for other humans who are developmentally capable of making decisions about their learning, then your progressive ideas will be simply "greasing the wheels" of the existing teacher-centered system of education in a way that will feel temporarily new. It's like putting on a new outfit without any true change to a person's character - it feels good for a bit, but that newness will soon wear out and the person will be left again with that same sense of discontent. The "portrait of a graduate" is a fantastic way to direct and realign a vision and mission, especially when a school's community of families and businesses is involved in that conversation. A compass can help you find your way, but it does not provide insight into the path you will take once you find your direction - that requires a map. Unfortunately, a map may not exist that can inform you of the specific obstacles you may face in forging a new path. The thing about student-centered learning is that there are far more students than there are teachers in any school. Preparing teachers for that journey does not mean creating a teacher-centered learning experience for students. It means preparing teachers to understand how the culture of a student-centered learning environment will blatantly challenge their own beliefs and behaviors rooted in their lifetime of experience with a teacher-centered schooling culture. So, yes, start with a "Profile of a Graduate" that meets the specific expectations of your community and expect that profile to adjust every few years to the changes your community of families and businesses will experience over time. Then, make sure the culture of your classroom learning spaces aligns with the culture of the curriculum that students from your community of families and businesses are seeking to learn. In this way, schools are not businesses with a product to sell - they are a service to a community. https://lnkd.in/gTYWJsMH
So You Designed a Profile of a Graduate, Now What?
