It’s troubling that so much of the national conversation focuses on political arguments about who’s right or wrong—left or right—when there’s a far more urgent issue at hand. How is it that a powerful nation like the United States leads the world in school shooting deaths? After hundreds of students, teachers, and staff have lost their lives in a place where they should feel safe, how do we continue to accept this tragic reality? Schools are meant to protect and nurture, yet we send children there without guaranteeing they’ll return home. Parents now face the terrifying reality of hoping their kids will survive the school day. While politicians enjoy the security and protection they’ve put in place for themselves, why aren't they taking stronger action to protect the most vulnerable among us—our children? How many more lives must be lost before we prioritize the safety of students and make real, lasting changes? The ongoing inaction raises questions about the true priorities of those in power and whether protecting lives is at the top of their agenda. #StopSchoolViolence

90% of South Carolina schools have a School Resource officer assigned to their campus. School resource officers are police officers who are trained to view challenging behavior the same way as they would a criminal act on the streets. As a result, a simple school yard fight can end up being classified as assault and battery. Nationally, we have seen students as young as six arrested by school resource officers. While the safety of our students in schools is paramount, we need to make sure that officers have the tools that they need to deal with challenging behavior of students, learn how to properly deescalate children, and understand how to deal with a student who has a disability. Children are not equipped with the same decision-making abilities as adults, nor are they able to comprehend lifelong consequences of one simple act. Most challenging behaviors are learning opportunities for children to better understand themselves and the world and children should not be treated as little adults. Only independent oversight and transparency will prevent sadistic treatment by those working with children, and such treatment being covered up by school districts. This story is rare, as generally schools get away with claiming that the video surveillance has been "lost" or "erased" or is otherwise unavailable. Imagine this was your child. These strategies are an asset to both childhood development and adult life, with the added benefit of being able to identify when others are using abusive behaviours towards them or others. We know that prevention is key to reducing domestic and family violence, and education on these topics during childhood years is one way implement a prevention method. Abusive is always a choice, there is no excuse for it, and it is never the victim/survivor’s fault.
