This week during the World Hydrogen Summit the OECD - OCDE and The World Bank organised a side event on de-risking hydrogen investments in emerging markets and developing countries (EMDCs). 🗣 Speakers discussed strategies to mitigate risks around financing clean hydrogen projects, and included Dolf Gielen of the World Bank, Henry Rushton from ING, James-Augustine Foley of Santander, Shan Kai The of FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, Jeroen Weurding of Swiss Re as well as Moongyung Lee and Deger Saygin from the OECD. 💡 Discover some of the key takeaways: 📌 Creating demand is crucial for mitigating offtake risk. Strategic alliances and partnerships among reputable technology providers, strategic equity investors, and established developers have proven effective in advancing clean hydrogen projects towards achieving Financial Investment Decision (FID). 📌 Enhancing bankability through appropriate risk mitigating strategies and blended finance, data disclosure and tailored insurance product to mitigate technology risk could be effective to deploying more private capital for clean hydrogen projects in EMDCs. 📌 Successful finance of clean hydrogen projects in EMDCs can only be reached through sound governmental support and robust regulatory measures that incentivise investments. Interesting session on the mobilisation of private capital for green hydrogen development in emerging and developing economies during the 10th OECD Forum on #GreenFinance & Investment!   Thanks to the panellists Peline Atamer, OECD; Bart White, Santander CIB; Claire Nicolas, World Bank; and Charlie Desmoulins, HDF Energy, and moderator Joseph Cordonnier.   Here are the key takeaways and insights from the session: 💡 A holistic approach is crucial to accelerate the development of green hydrogen projects and mitigate associated risks, including for certification, off-take and technology. 💡 MDBs can help accelerate green hydrogen development in developing countries by providing institutional support, technical assistance, as well as project financing. 💡 Aligning interests of policymakers, project developers and financial institutions will help to ensure a sustainable development of green hydrogen. 💡 OECD and other international organisations play a key role in collecting case studies and sharing information of successful projects from first-movers. The energy transition presents many opportunities for finance and investment, even for high-risk projects, Lord John Browne, Chairman of BeyondNetZero, said at the ADIPEC Strategic Conference session, ‘How to fast track finance and prioritise investments for the energy transition’. “What is very clear is that there are plenty of opportunities. You could develop lots of different things if you could find the right mechanism to get the right rate of return. I have no problem in investing for very high rates of return, in activities that reduce greenhouse gases, in line with science-based targets. There’s no problem as well in investing in energy transition assets, even in the Global South, with returns that commensurate with the risks you need. My comment is that it is not at the level we need, therefore we need to bring in more activity at a return that is satisfactory to be financed,” he said. #ADIPEC #EnergyTransition #Decarbonisation
