China Classification Society (CCS) released the “2023 Low-carbon Development Outlook for Shipping.” Two years ago, CCS released the “2021 Low-carbon Development Outlook for Shipping” at the North Bund Forum to explore the path for the shipping industry to achieve emission reduction targets.  In July 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) passed the “2023 Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships” at the meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), and proposed the goal that “to peak GHG emissions from international shipping as soon as possible and to reach #netzero #GHGemissions by or around, i.e. close to, 2050, taking into account of different national circumstances,” demonstrating the IMO’s ambition to actively address global climate challenges. A recent analysis by UK-based maritime consultancy UMAS has shed light on the alignment of the Revised IMO #ghg Strategy with science-based targets, which will require a strong and rapid response from national and regional #governments as well as corporations alike. 🛳 ☘ 🌏 ➡ The key finding is that the IMO’s targets correspond to a path of 1.55-1.61.5°C according to the budget defined by the IPCC. ➡ As explained, the huge level of modifications to existing and new #ships, even at the minimum level of ambition, which requires the average ship’s GHG intensity to be reduced by 86% by 2040, spells an end to the era of fossil-fuelled shipping. #decarbonization #shipping #netzero2050 International Maritime Organization #fossilfuels #shipsandshipping #maritime

🚢 Is the Maritime Industry Ready for Net-Zero Emissions by 2050? 🌊 The recent gathering of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee ("MEPC80") in July 2023 has set sail towards a sustainable future for shipping.🌍 🌿 Highlights from MEPC80: Among the outcomes of MEPC80 is the adoption of the IMO 2023 Strategy on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships. The strategy commits to achieving net-zero GHG emissions "close to 2050," with interim goals to reduce emissions significantly by 2030 and 2040. 🚀 Introducing the FFT Project: The Future Fuels and Technology for Low and Zero-Carbon Shipping Project ("FFT Project"), a collaboration between the IMO and the Republic of Korea, promises to accelerate this journey.
