Did you know that only 4.8% of people in England and 4.1% in Scotland with a learning disability go on to secure paid employment once their education finishes compared to 80% of their peers? Asda became the first supermarket to collaborate with DFN Project SEARCH in the summer of 2023, working closely with a local college to provide paid work experience at our Queensferry store. We’ve now expanded our Supported Internship Programme, offering year-long work experience placements to over 70 students with learning disabilities or learning difficulties. The programme continues to work in close collaboration with DFN Project SEARCH and expands the initiative to a total of 11 stores. It’s a brilliant programme that aims to give young people with special educational needs a taste of a real-life working environment, learn new skills and grow in confidence so that they can find that first job once they finish their studies. As part of the next phase of the programme we’ll introduce bespoke uniform items for our interns that will carry the message: “Happy to Help, please bear with me I’m learning”. In so many ways this is true of all of us, but for our interns it will help them build their confidence to support and interact with future customers. We’ve started the year with a strong focus on rediscovering our DNA, our values…our “Asda-ness”. This programme is a good example of that DNA and I’m delighted to see it expanded.

The NOHFC internship program has supported Sudbury's own BadRiverBoats in providing hands-on learning experiences. Guy's team leveraged this funding to strengthen the Northeastern marine industry by creating skilled opportunities for local talent.

This summer Sterling College participated in a new model for the internship experience in partnership with UVM. Students participating in the program "worked with businesses and organizations supporting community resilience in the Northeast Kingdom that hadn’t previously hosted interns, and that had limited connection with UVM". Students stayed on the Sterling College Campus for an eight-week program that supported 12 students who immersed themselves in projects that focused on community resilience in the region. The first week of summer vacation for my kids is here. We're gearing up for summer camps and activities. This time of year takes me back to my college internship, where I ran sports camps for the local YMCA. We started and ended each day by reviewing the core values: Caring Respect Honesty Responsibility. We would talk about these as we opened the day, and at the end of the day, we would ask if anyone saw any of the campers displaying these behaviors. Those who did were rewarded with a little prize and a round of applause. If organizations reward and recognize core values, they will continue to permeate through the organization. Think about what behaviors are being rewarded and emulated and which ones you want to be magnified.

Recently, Richard Bland College of William & Mary was the recipient of a SCHEV Impact Grant, which totals more than $3.9 million. This initiative will create more paid internship and work-based learning opportunities for Virginia students to bolster their career readiness and academic growth. Learning about USDA internships and career opportunities through the E. Kika De La Garza Fellowship Program allowed Pereira to promote USDA as a potential employer to the student community at UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and offer classes that qualify students for careers at USDA. “I have been able to help create internship opportunities for my students, giving them the hands-on experience they’ll need in their careers,” she said. To date, 23 UTRGV students have interned with USDA, and 10 have transitioned into employment. https://lnkd.in/ektgwmPT
