Every public speaker has a responsibility to create a comfortable, respectful and safe space. Depending on the type of engagement there are different ways I do this. When I MC, I ask everybody to create this space together and here's an example of what I did at the Volunteering WA conference through 3 steps: 1. I acknowledge my nerves 2. Ask for everybody's support 3. Request we extend this support to every speaker As the MC, it is then my responsibility to continue and lead this throughout a conference and create safe, fun and respectful space for the speakers and the audience. I would love to hear examples of how other speakers create space 🙂 #publicspeaking #mc #speaker Amy

3rd Story Time at the Farmer's Market is a wrap! This event has the smallest turnout (# of kids per reading) and crowd size (# of kids at the Farmer's Market), but the highest engagement (# of parents asking about ParentChild +, how often we have events, and how to make a donation). Lesson learned: 1. Consistency is key. Parents did not engage with us outside of attending the Story Time with their kids during the first event. 2. Attendance & crowd size doesn't always equal engagement. The turnout (# of kids per reading) and crowd size (# of kids at the Farmer's Market) were much larger in the first 2 events. 3. Eventbrite works. One dad told me today that he found us through Google search when looking for things to do with their kids. I didn't do any marketing outside of creating events on Eventbrite. 4. Kids are brutally honest! If the the story isn't engaging, they'll just get up and leave regardless how much the parents want to stay 😭 . If the story is engaging, you'd think the kids are at a Taylor Swift concert 😍. 5. Kids LOVE books. The surprise and joy on the kids' faces when they find that they can take a book is worth giving up Saturday mornings. 6. The most important lesson: there's enough interest in the Story Time to keep the events going! We will add virtual events alongside in-person events to experiment next. #children #marketing #events #parents
