Optimal performance in PV systems hinges significantly on the appropriate selection of cables, with precise attention to sizing. An integral aspect of this consideration involves understanding the color conventions associated with these cables. PV systems typically comprise both DC and AC components, necessitating awareness of color coding for effective installation. When it comes to Solar cables: The color red signifies connections to the positive (+) contacts, linking various system components. Meanwhile, black is employed for interconnecting the negative (-) contacts. AC wiring, on the other hand, follows diverse color conventions globally: Green-yellow designates the protective earth. Brown (or an alternative color) is utilized for the phase. Given these color differentiations, it becomes imperative to consult and adhere to the standards of the country where the PV system is to be installed. A reference point for color coding, as per the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), includes: - Protective Earth (PE): Green-Yellow - Neutral (N): Blue - Line, Single phase (L): Brown or Black - Line, 3 Phase (L1, L2, L3): Brown or Black This adherence to standardized color codes ensures a systematic and safe approach to cable installation in PV systems, aligning with international practices. 📢 Technical Update from GameChange Solar! We are happy to announce that our innovative rectangular head bolt design has achieved recognized component status per UL 2703 from Intertek. 🎉 Our patent-pending design streamlines installation and reinforces the connection between trackers and solar modules, especially in high-wind regions. By addressing pry-out failures caused by extreme winds, this solution offers a robust and efficient alternative to traditional bolting methods. Key Benefits: 🔧 Reduced installation time and labor costs by decreasing the number of bolts per module. 🔧 Increased load capacity and stability of PV module and rack assembly. 🔧 One-handed torquing thanks to the bolt’s elongated head, which catches on the inside of the module frame. Third-party testing has shown over 20% increases in module capacity compared to standard bolts. Our Chief Engineer, Scott Brian Van Pelt, P.E., highlights that this innovation not only boosts mechanical capacity but also improves installation rates. CEO @ ELEK.com® Software for Electrical Power Systems Design | HV Cable Systems & Earthing Design Specialist | Hiring Now Local and Remote Roles
HV Cable Ratings - Buried in Backfill (Thermal Resistivity) To achieve the highest possible current rating for buried circuits, cables can be installed in an envelope of material with better thermal heat conduction properties than the native soil. This additional material is referred to as a thermal backfill. The level of compaction and grain size distribution determines the thermal resistivity of a backfill material. Backfill thermal resistivity should be known (through measurement) to be considered in a design. The native soil thermal resistivity was increased to 2 K.m/W, and the backfill thermal resistivity value varied from 0.7 K.m/W up to 2 K.m/W. The figure shows that a lower thermal resistivity of the backfill improves the cable current ratings. The calculations were performed using ELEK Cable HV Software: https://lnkd.in/gVNfxJNX #powersystems #cables #powercables #highvoltage #electricalengineering #renewableenergy #powertransmission
