𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐌𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 I began investing in the capital markets when I was 18, and I owe it all to my father. He’s been involved in the markets since 1980s, and his influence on me has been profound. When I was about 10 years old, I was an avid cartoon watcher. Meanwhile, my father would be glued to CNBC after coming from work. For those familiar with CNBC, there’s a ticker at the bottom of the screen displaying company names with prices scrolling from A to Z. Whenever I asked to change the channel, my father would promise, "Ye niche wala Z tk pahuch jayega na to change kr dunga" So, I started watching that ticker, reading out each name I could pronounce. It became a routine, and though I didn’t realize it at the time, this early exposure left a mark on my subconscious mind. As I grew older, my interest in the markets grew too. By the time I was preparing for competitive exams, I wanted to invest but had limited funds—just my pocket money. But my interest was too strong to let it go. One day I decided to go that extra mile. I borrowed some 15000 from my landlord (who was a very nice person) and promised to return him 16500 after a month. I also put my entire pocket money there and invested in 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐢. I was having a big packet of bournvita which my mom gave me. I still clearly remember those few days where I survived on Bournvita and Sattu (at that time one full glass of Sattu costed 10 Rs). Eventually, I was able to return the ₹16,500 to my landlord after 1.5 months and continued to invest. My journey into investing began in 2012, and I credit this path to my father, whose influence through those early days watching CNBC helped shape my interest. Even now he calls me every 2-3 days and we discuss markets for hours. This exchange of knowledge between us is a testament to how far we’ve come. Had a great time at the New Jersey Investment Management Intersect Conference last Thursday! I want to thank my fellow panelists (Brian Carney, Chip Rosenthal, and Kevin Mahn) who tackled some tough questions around the optimal allocation mix and some of the changes and shifts we are seeing in the industry. I want to thank all the speakers and attendees for engaging in thoughtful and forward thinking discussions. During this fast pace and unique environment we find ourselves in, it was helpful to hear other Chief Investment Officer and professional perspectives on how to think about benchmarks, alternatives, and ideas for risk mitigation. I also want to thank David Hoffman for organizing and hosting! Great event! Below are my top 5 takeaways from the day: There is so much innovation in the financial industry! We heard from over 10 different companies and speakers that all head strategies that are really offering a different approach on how to add value to portfolios and shift risk. Left a lot to think about! There is no one “right” way to do things; there is more than one way to make money out there! I didn’t agree with every approach I heard at the conference, but I felt that they were all well thought out and competent approaches to how to manage money. The real trick is finding the one that makes the most sense for you. Reducing risk (in the form of volatility) continues to be a key theme in the industry. Many of the presentations focused on how to dampen volatility and source returns from somewhere other than traditional market beta (exposure). There isn’t a lot of “whistling past the graveyard” in the industry! Back in the financial crisis, the financial industry caught a lot of flack for not properly assessing risk and identifying where it might be hiding in the shadows. I sensed from the conference that the industry has a healthy appreciation for risk, and continues to evolve how it thinks about it. The general quality of professionals in the financial industry continues to improve! I was very impressed by the sophistication and quality of attendees. It has been a difficult industry since the financial crisis, and they say only the strong survive…..toast to the strong! #finance #investments #financialadvisor #assetallocator #panel #panelist
