I’ve always been fascinated by mission statements. Theoretically, these few sentences should define to the outside world why an organization exists. It should be unique and realistic, but representative of the impact the organization is intended to have on their constituency. It should tell you what would be missing if they suddenly popped out of existence.
I think this is a great example of such a mission statement doing just that:
The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.
You can’t read that statement and not know what they do, who they serve and what would be missing if they didn't exist.
Just for fun, see if you can connect the following mission statements (A-H) with the organizations they represent (1-8). Can you tell who they serve and what differentiates them?
1. Providence Health & Services
2. Trinity Health
3. HCA Healthcare
4. Optum
5. New York-Presbyterian Hospital Westchester
6. Kaiser Permanente
7. UC Health (University of Colorado)
8. Mayo Clinic
