Aerospace technology is evolving at a breakneck pace and behind those advancements is a critical need for better, more effective components. If we get to an energy system based on renewables only...How much storage would we need? People want to do their thing, regardless of availability of renewable energy. Anywhere between 40 (source below) and 130. It depends on your system (%wind, sun, nuclear, overcapacity installed, interconnectivity, and what the neighboring country is doing, etc). That is exactly the future we're building our batteries for. Would you rather an hour of someone’s time where they were mentally present for 10% or 20 minutes where they were mentally present for 90% One of the biggest mistakes I witnessed when working in corporate, was the valuation of time, and no consideration to ENERGY. We can’t often increase our time. It’s an external resource. But energy! Energy we can play with. An internal resource that is undervalued and overlooked. Imagine changing the energy of your entire team…. Just for a moment, picture what that could look like.

As we close the books on 2023, I wanted to share some reflections from the last year working with the amazing #teamadditive for Siemens Energy and Materials Solutions - a Siemens Energy Business. It's been another record year for growth of volume adoption of #additivemanufacturing across all our factories. Outside of the planned growth through our component roadmaps we have also seen an encouraging uptick in demand for AM applications to support supply chain challenges that many industries are still facing. What I am personally most excited about though is the demonstrated connection we can now clearly see how #AM can support the mission of Siemens Energy to lead the #energytransition: ☛ we continue to gain more operating hours on component upgrades and repairs to modernize and extend the life of our existing fleet assets (My favorite photo of the year is our own Jan Münzer with his head in a gas turbine during inspection of AM vanes that have been in service for 4 years!) ☛ the HYFLEXPOWER Project is paving the way for fuel flexibility and successfully ran a modified SGT-400 gas turbine with 100% hydrogen, which is only possible through advanced AM enabled combustor designs ☛ we are developing AM heat exchange concepts to support the transition to new energy systems of the future e.g. solid oxide fuels cells and carbon capture The biggest challenge in the next year and beyond remains achieving the repeatability and reliability needed to scale production to industrialized levels, while innovation continues at pace. My hope for 2024 is even closer collaboration with our internal and external customers, OEM partners and suppliers, to continue to build on the end-to-end mindset that will be critical to solving this challenge.
