In a country of centuries-old streets and protected architecture, accessibility hasn't always been smooth sailing. But in the digital world - where the sky's the limit - there's no excuse. As our User Experience Lead and accessibility advocate, Lynsey Brownlow is talking about the ethics of inclusivity, the billion-pound business case for investment, and the non-negotiables when it comes to inclusive design. https://hubs.la/Q029zHc90

Thanks Eugene for this fabulous illustration of the importance of embedding accessibility from the start of the design process. And while there are significant cost savings, it also greatly reduces the stress of tight, or missed, timelines due to having to squeeze in remediation at the last moment. Something to think about on a Friday! #AccessibilityMatters #IAAPADS #AccessibilityForAll #AccessibleDocumentSpecialist #Accessibility #DigitalAccessibility
🚫 Cutting Corners in Accessible Design: A Cautionary Note 🚫 We often find ourselves in the push and pull of project timelines and budgets. It can be tempting to opt for quicker designs, especially when under pressure. But one area we shouldn't compromise on is #accessibility. Remember the age-old saying, "Penny wise, pound foolish"? When we skimp on accessibility in the design process stages, we're not truly saving. In fact, we're setting ourselves up for potentially higher costs down the line. Fixing accessibility issues retroactively can be far more expensive than integrating them from the start, not to mention the reputational risks and potential legal implications. 💡 Accessible design is not just about compliance; it's about ensuring everyone can interact with our content, regardless of their abilities. Let's prioritize inclusivity from the get-go, recognizing that what seems like a small investment now can prevent a significant expenditure in the future. #InclusiveDesign #UserExperience #AccessibilityDesign

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 This month, our colleague Merel hosted two sessions on inclusive design with our Butterfly Community members. With members from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, Somaliland, Italy, Greece, and the Netherlands, we explored what inclusive design means to us and what a designer must do to apply it. 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: 📌 The design process; ensuring that you involve a diverse group of people throughout the process. 📌 The product or service; making sure it is accessible and acceptable for diverse users. Inclusive designers need to be aware of the best practices for designing for inclusion and understanding the commonly used standards for accessibility and acceptability. However, the most important skills are being humble, practising self-reflection, and being able to co-create with a diverse group of users. For co-creation, you need empathy, active listening, communication... So, there is a need to have soft skills and an open learning mindset. This is exactly what we practice in our Butterfly Community, where we listen and exchange, where members are more interested in learning from others than in showcasing their expertise! We also reviewed a great tool from Greenberry that poses critical questions to a design team to assess if a project is inclusive. Some key takeaways: ➡ It is good to regularly unpack with yourself, your client or your team if you are really inclusive and who you might be missing. ➡ It is good to also set boundaries; 100% inclusivity might not be possible, but you can make an effort to increase the inclusivity of your project. ➡ Designers can play an important role in advocating inclusivity towards their clients. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼-𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵! Check out the Active Inclusive Design page (in Dutch) https://lnkd.in/e8vKenr9.
