I’m unsure of the exact way to quantify the impact of this, but… People will take less money or % ownership to: - work with people they want to work with - work on a project bigger than themselves - work on a team that motivates them - work on something that genuinely excites them -sleep better at night in terms of perceived risk I can speak from experience having done this myself. The hardest role in a company is CHRO. It’s also the most overlooked, misunderstood and undervalued. It’s easier to lead an org that builds a product, financial plan, data, marketing plan or sales funnel, than lead the strategy for people. Why? People are unpredictable. Leaders can be challenging. Teams can react in ways that are surprising. People can be messy and have real challenges that have to be addressed by HR Then layer on a global pandemic, remote work, endless hiring, immediately followed by a massive drop in valuation and layoffs. It's whiplash. It’s also a lonely role - there is so much that can’t be shared. If only I understood this role better throughout my career I’d have given so much more time, attention and care to my HR colleagues. You can start now though.

Dear hiring teams, Please don’t cage an exotic, free bird. You say want a unicorn. You say you want a big thinker. You say you want someone with creative ideas. But you don’t What you really want is an order taker. A pencil pusher. You want a yes woman or yes man. If this is the case, be honest with yourself and more importantly- be honest with them. There’s nothing wrong with hiring someone to fulfill the needs of the org even if they're mundane. But there is something wrong with selling a role as anything other than what it actually is. The hiring and job-seeking process is about alignment. Candidates need to be honest with you and you need to be honest with them.
