Relink.org is interested in sharing an article from the Columbus Dispatch dated July 10, 2024, which highlights the significant increase in calls to the suicide hotline 988 in the Central Ohio region in 2024. The article reports that there has been a more than 50% rise in calls during the first half of 2024, with an average of approximately 1,600 calls per month from individuals in crisis in central Ohio. This surge is largely attributed to the growing awareness of the service and increased funding. As the program nears its second year on July 16, the community is urged to utilize the 988 hotline for immediate assistance if experiencing suicidal thoughts. If you want to learn about the history of crisis hotlines and why the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is such a success, I highly suggest checking out Dr. John Draper and Dr. Richard McKeon's article. It covers the long and interesting history of crisis response and crisis hotlines in the U.S. and explores how today's crisis hotline infrastructure is helping reduce emotional distress and suicidality. I agree with their main point in this article: the establishment of 988 has the potential to transform behavioral health and crisis care in the United States for the better.

Some of you may be aware there is intent to transition some Aboriginal funding currently commissioned through PHNs directly to Aboriginal Community Control. It includes Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Services and the Integrated Team Care (Chronic Disease Care Coordination) Program. Consultations were undertaken by Ninti One Limited, in partnership with First Nations Co through 2023 and the final report for the Independent review of sector funding arrangements and service provider capability for First Nations Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Services and the Integrated Team Care Program has been published on the DoHAC website. The page also contains links to summaries of consultations that were undertaken with stakeholders and community members throughout the Review. The New York Times recently highlighted a study of twins that further confirms our understanding of the long-term health effects of childhood trauma on individuals. For example, the study found that "a twin who reported maltreatment was 1.2 times as likely to suffer from a mental illness as the unaffected twin in identical twin pairs, and 1.7 times as likely in fraternal twin pairs." The study's findings also highlight the importance of investment in early prevention and trauma mitigation programs by adding to what Mark Bellis, a professor of public health at Liverpool John Moores University in Britain described as “the increasingly irrefutable evidence that it is going to cost us all a lot less if we invest in tackling” abuse and neglect of children now, rather than “continuing to pay for the epidemic levels of harm” they cause downstream.
