⛳️🔒 Cybersecurity and Golf: A Surprising Duo! 🔒⛳️
As many of you know, I'm on a journey to be a PGA TOUR player. As I've been leaning into becoming a professional in that space, I have had some hard learnings about the game of golf. Interestingly enough, I have seen many of those similarities between my #cyber journey and golf journey. At the same time, learning how to be a better golfer has made me a better #ciso, but also a better human. I want to share with you:
Here are the top 3 ways these two seemingly different worlds align:
🎯 - Precision and Patience: Just like a golfer needs precise aim and endless patience to land that perfect shot, cybersecurity professionals need to meticulously analyze threats and patiently implement measures to protect their assets.
🧠 - Mental Focus: On the green or in the office, staying mentally sharp is crucial. Golfers clear their minds to focus on the next swing, while cybersecurity experts maintain their focus to anticipate and counteract cyber threats.
🧨 - Learning from Mistakes: Every golfer knows the pain of a missed shot, but it's also a valuable learning experience. Similarly, in cybersecurity, every #breach or near-miss is an opportunity to learn and improve defenses.
Sometimes, the best insights come from the most unexpected places!

🏌️⛳️The Masters is always one the best weeks of the year for me. It provides unparalleled excitement in the world of golf and provides many valuable lessons.
1. Preparation is Key: Just like golfers prepare for each round, cybersecurity professionals must continuously train and stay updated on the latest threats and defences. Tiger recorded his 24th consecutive cut and I can guarantee each year his preparation was meticulous, drawing on past experiences.
2. Strategic Thinking: Golfers strategically navigate each hole, weighing risks and rewards. Similarly, cybersecurity experts must anticipate potential vulnerabilities and plan proactive defences. Amen corner epitomises risk and reward. There was only one golfer who navigated the challenge successfully.
3. Precision and Accuracy: A slight miscalculation in golf can lead to a missed shot, much like a minor oversight in cybersecurity can result in a breach. They say golf is game of inches and Augusta National is no different. Plenty of very good shots resulted in poor results over the weekend and made the best players in the world look ordinary.
4. Adaptability: Conditions can change rapidly on the golf course, requiring players to adapt their strategies on the fly. Similarly, cyber threats evolve constantly, demanding agility and flexibility in defence strategies. Round 2 on Friday were some of the most difficult conditions I have seen at The Masters. It was fascinating viewing as the big names struggled to make the cut one which of which quickly came to regret his comments earlier in the week.
5. Teamwork: Behind every successful golfer is a team of coaches, caddies, and support staff. Likewise, effective cybersecurity requires collaboration among IT professionals, management, and end-users. Scottie Scheffler is undoubtedly playing the best golf of the last 20 years however he didn't take all the credit. As a leader, Scottie enjoyed the walk off the 18th green to roaring fans with his caddie Ted Scott who supported him throughout. Scottie understands he wouldn't be where he is without the team around him.
The biggest question of all though: Who will apply these lessons in the C-STEM Charity Golf Day this Thursday?! 🏌️⛳️

How Golf and Cybersecurity are alike?
What a question. Last month, I had the wonderful experience of golfing in Scotland, the home of golf. I am an OK golfer, certainly enthusiastic, but with a whole lot to learn to improve. While I was in Scotland, I benefited from very knowledgeable caddies who spotted problems in my swing, and helped me play better, resulting in a more enjoyable experience.
It occurred to me that the fun sport that I love and the business that I love actually have a few similarities.
1. Execution – my swing had some imperfections, once pointed out, my better execution generated better results. Cyber folks need to follow through on execution within your programs to achieve better results.
2. Proper framework – posture, positioning of hands, better takeaway all got a tune-up and helped me tremendously. Cyber folks use established frameworks designed for specific cyber and business purposes. No need to re-invent the wheel. Many before us have found tried and true that works.
3. Focus – paying attention to the moment at hand results in a better swing, or in business catching an anomaly, preventing a breach or catching a potential problem in a project before it turns into a security issue. Keep your eye on the ball, so to speak!
4. Get Expert Advice – the Scottish caddies and their expertise made a big difference in my experience and helped me to make some notable improvements in my game last month. Outside experts bring “sharper eyes” and a broader view of problems and best practice solutions that you can leverage. These experts, in golf and in cyber, are worth their money.
5. Not Perfect – golf and information security have goals of perfection but are “games” of “not perfect” and of doing your best with what you have. Set the goal of perfection but with the realistic expectation of NOT PERFECT, and you will be satisfied with your progress.
I hope this golf to security comparison has been helpful. For you golfers, if you have not been to Scotland, get there. For you security professionals, if you do not know SEVN-X, get to know us. The experience for all will be worth it!
