Far too many of us in the industry - or even those who just enjoy free ride/backcountry skiing - have lost loved ones to avalanches, crevasse falls or other mountain disasters. According to Dominique Perret’s research, 90% of these accidents are down to poor decision making. Many skiers/snowboarders feel that they have enough knowledge to go into the backcountry because they’ve read the avalanche bulletin, they know how to use a beacon, and they’ve practiced a companion rescue before. I noticed in BC, Canada there is a much higher focus on getting certified with AST-1 and AST-2 before heading into the backcountry than I have seen anywhere else in Europe, Japan or further afield.
