I have always been a computer geek. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford a computer until quite late. Luckily, my good friend Mikkel N. had a Commodore 64 that I could play with. He taught me to write command lines to run games from a tape station (LOAD "*",8,1 if you are old enough 😉). The tapes turned to floppy discs and later CDs, and slowly, the command lines turned to double-clicks. It's now easier than ever to run software and games. At age 14, I finally saved enough money to buy the components I needed to build a gaming PC. I didn't have enough to buy a top-of-the-line PC, but I figured I could buy the components individually and make it myself. The lady who cut my hair as a young kid was married to Per Engelbrecht, who helped me assemble my first PC. He shared his knowledge and lent me books on computers. He wanted me to know the difference between a BIOS and a Northbridge, and I ate it up. He taught me about FreeBSD and Linux; it was the first time I had encountered open-source. I was fascinated, but it meant I had to return to command lines (pun intended), which never appealed to me. The idea of community, however, always appealed to me. Building things in a vacuum can unleash a unique level of creativity, but you get magic when you gather a group around a project they care about. Open-source doesn't put people in a box; it enables those who care the most to solve the problems they are passionate about. That's how we went from command lines to double-click, from isolated personal computers to the internet, and it's what will take us from text-based developer tools to graphic user interfaces that enable more people to build. Open-source = freedom, creativity, and magic, and that excites me.

Für Unternehmer und Geschäftsführer, die ihre unternehmerischen und persönlichen Ziele schneller erreichen wollen.
TAB Member Case Study: Niche Studio Mikael Wedemeyer and Nathan Mussig run their very successful web development and design firm in Queensland, Australia. One thing that the duo learned early on is that bigger isn’t necessarily better. Business success, they realized, has as much to do with saying no to the wrong opportunities as it does with saying yes to the right ones. “For us now, it's about being smart and profitable and being able to choose to work with good people rather than feeling pressure to take all the work that we need just to feed the beast,” Mikael said. “We just want to do great work and in a sane way. And be able to run the company rather than it run us.” And that is where TAB comes in. Mikael and Nathan are each Members of separate TAB Boards and participate together in their monthly TAB business coaching sessions. TAB has helped them become the business owners they always wanted to be. “Thanks to TAB, we approach our business differently now than back when we were running around with our heads chopped off,” Nathan said.
