There is much to learn from Ukrainian innovation and much to do to support them. Primes are fine, as far as they go, but public and private actors need to review both #procurement and #innovation - urgently. Folks like Andrew Turner CB CBE are leaders on these themes. They need to be listened to by John Healey MP, Chris Bryant MP and others. #Security #Defence

We don't usually think of a research career in IR as emotionally or psychologically risky. My experience working through graphic news reports on conflict-related sexual violence earlier this year, however, proved deeply traumatic. Influenced by overlapping identities and social roles as a wife, mother, daughter, and sister, this experience has had a profound effect on my personal relationships. Navigating trauma and its effect on those close to me has, moreover, been very tough. In a paper to be delivered at the forthcoming ISA Virtual Conference in August, I will be offering some reflections on the risk of vicarious traumatisation to IR researchers, and the importance of adequate graduate training to prepare researchers for the potential psychological and emotional risks of this type of work. I will further discuss the institutional obligations of IR departments to offer support for researchers at risk of vicarious traumatisation. Because here's the thing: one never can know when a topic will have a traumatic effect, and trauma compounds over time so that even when one works through one traumatic experience, a topic can very quickly trigger retraumatisation.

If you care about these issues and feel like you’re alone, let me assure you that you’re not. Hundreds of heterodox thinkers coming from every field, all political persuasions, and many countries descended on Chicago this week to share in the vision of reforming higher education. This isn’t the beginning, but we are just getting started… so let’s get to work.
